Horse was playing up with the farrier at the weekend, rearing up ever 2 minutes (another story altogether!) and unfortunately came down on a nail that was half in and bent it. Farrier had a good look at foot and said he didn't think he had done any damage but may be bit sore.

He is fine in walk but lame in trot and a bit sore on a tight circle to the right. There is no heat in his foot and it is better than it was a couple of days ago. If it isn't better by next week then I will be calling farrier back, but just wondering what I can do to speed up the healing process?

Heard of arnica and epsom salts, but don't know how many tablets to give, where to buy it from etc? Is there anything else that will help?

Morning :)

Tubbing with Epsom Salts (standing foot in water) is used to draw out infection, pus and so on. It would be an excellent idea to do this, using warm water and keeping the foot in for five/ten minutes twice a day. This should keep the wound clean.

Arnica is for bruising and shock, and using the tablets will do no harm. Arnica tablets 6c (potency) from Boots, give about 8 pills three/two times a day, hidden in a cut out apple. Not an easy thing to do. Gradually reduce the dose.

Personally, after tubbing the wound, I would dry it as much as possible, and then pour some Tea tree oil into it to prevent infection. Amazing stuff and a natural but very powerful healer. Six to ten drops, twice a day after tubbing, then hold the leg up ( stand on newspaper) if poss for ten minutes.

I don't know much about poultices, I'm sure someone will bring them up.

Hope that helps, and good luck :)

Tubbing and tea tree oil are excellent recommendations. A good brand of aloe Vera will speed up healing significantly. I say good brand as many cheaper ones do not contain very much aloe, mostly bulking ingredients.
Also reiki will bring amazing results to all injuries, If you have a practitioner in your area.

Give Ainsworth a call they are excellent they will tell you which homeopathic treatment is best and the dose etc.
I used them for my horse and they sent them out so I rec'd them next day. They are also very reasonable on price too. Tel 0207 935 5330

Dont wish to be alarmist , but friends horse was dead within 3 days because of foot infection not treated 'hard' enough.Freind had bathed it, poulticed etc , but the infection was into the bone in no time. I m with poster who suggests vet and antibiotics.

If his foot was hot or he wasn't getting better or it was getting worse then yes I would call vet/farrier straight away, but I really don't think there is any need at the moment. I just wanted some advice on how I could help him heal naturally.

I bought some arnica tablets but they are 30c, not 6c - does anyone know how many to give?
