Thank god for you Minkymoo!! Someone who suffers with Dyslexia who doesn't see it as an excuse to not bother!! You are a refreshing exception to what seem to be a sad and lazy norm.

For all the rest of you that suffer with this condition, take note.

i do try but i can't spell check when i'm spelling right, just getting words wrong. the spell check is great if your dyslexia involves not being able to spell correctly.
but what if you just can't figure out the right word to put in?
your and you're being an example

In that case my post is not relevant to you - I clearly stated that Minkymoo is an example who see their problem as a good reason to not bother or try - you do, and you and your post was perfectly easy to understand and therefore there is no problem

the apostrophe rule really is easy. in "you're", and "there's", for example, it is there to show that a letter is missing ("you Are", "there Is" - capitals are obviously showing the missing letters.)
even with plurals it's easy, there are just a few rules to follow.
as far as brakes/breaks, too/to/two etc, blame the English language! It is just a case of learning them, just like learning a times table. boring but necessary.
i truly sympathise with genuine dyslexics, but not with those (and i've met a few) who are just bone idle and use it as an excuse to be crap at English and get more time in their exams! one of my cousins is profoundly dyslexic but has just passed her finals and is now a qualified radiographer. she had to write a dissertation etc, and it took her a long time to do it perfectly, but she did.

I think the whole point is that all any of us want is for people to try! Everyone makes mistakes - it not making the effort that is irritating!!

My OH is dyslexic, he and his friends present a movie podcast with lots of listeners - they have a forum where listeners and presenters chat about movies etc and my OH makes a real effort make sure his posts are correct in terms of spelling and grammar. It can be done

It is difficult, no-one is pretending it isn't!

Just think about what you are writing. Using your example of you & you're, 'you're' basically is an abbreviation of 'you are', so:
you are a nice person or you're a nice person
your is possessive, so:
your dog is really nice

Then you have to & too which can be tricky, to is a preposition - to sleep, he tore it to pieces and has many other uses (far too many to put on here and not put people to sleep!).

Too is an adverb - young, clever, and rich too, I am too! this is too much.

If it makes you all feel better, I also suffer really badly from Dyscalculia which is the number dyslexia - far worse than my dyslexia! I absolutely DREAD any maths, spreadsheets etc. I just can't see it all properly.

So, how much does it matter? I suppose how much you make it matter. I am not trying to be harsh or mean here, just that I guess i only try that much harder myself & I don't ever use it as an excuse and don't really see why some people do.

Ha ha! Just realised my post is miles behind the post I was answering to! That is probably the most annoying thing as no-one has any idea what I am referring to!

Oh well, dyslexics - we get there eventually
