My boy is a 16.2hh TB. He is 6yrs. He is an ex racer and I have not yet started work with him post racing - he is currently winding down.

I am looking at 3 bits:
Dynamic RS loose ring
Dynamic RS eggbutt
Myler loose ring wide barrel comfort snafflle

I want to kit him out with the best from the start - but can not afford to get it wrong and have to keep buying bits at these prices!
He has been ridden in a loose ring - but only during his racing life. He will be starting completely from scratch. Possible future competing in dressage, show jumping, showing and jumpcross- depending what he prefers!

Any experienced advice welcome please.

I have the Sprenger Dynamic eggbut on my young horse who although built like a brick sh*t house is very sensitive in the mouth. I have also tried in on an ex racer who has always been very fussy and gobby in a normal type snaffle and the change in him was very very good, and immediate. Both horses remain light and relaxed in this bit.

Just out of interest why did you choose the eggbutt over other rings?

Just trying to decide what would be best for mine.

tbh i'd borrow a few and see which one he prefers before splashing out, there's a reason why most of us have a huge selection of bits, unfortunately... only he can tell you what suits his mouth, his attitude, and your riding best, at any given time!
very best of luck with him.

That is not possible for us - we are on our own and people we do know are 20mins away and tbh they do not have these sort of bits - just normal cheaper bits & are happy hackers.

It was my EDT who advised me. My horse has a large and fleshy mouth plus was, at that time, just learning about turning aids so it was a good compromise between a fulmer cheekpiece and a loose ring which he had first been mouthed in.

Im very wary of loose rings as I have seen a number of horses whose lips actually end up inside the hole in the mouthpiece where it joins the rings. The last thing you need is a pinch. I dont think its a good compromise to then put rubber bit rings on, seems to defeat the object in a way.

I think a bit that stays a little more still in the mouth is often more acceptable especially for babies or those with mouth issues. I know people like to think their horse is 'playing / mouthing' on something but IME this can actually lead to problems later which are often 'solved' with drops and flashes.

Because of the curve on the Sprenger it does seem to sit more naturally in the mouth than the others I tried.

I've never ridden any horse in the Sprenger bits, but I love the mylers as I can understand the design process behind them.

I currently have three mylers - the MBO2 loose ring, the MB04 pelham and the MB04 long shank combination.

The best thing about the myler range is that as long as you keep the same mouthpiece, the horse doesn't really know what ring style you have so tend to go well in DR competitions even if they are schooled in something different.

Both are good bits but I have no experience of the Sprengers, but mylers I know are fab. I love mine and would never put a horse in a "tradational" bit again.
