Looking for some kind of smallish lockable storage shed for my field, but want one that big scary spiders can’t sneak into. Not sure if any exist? Was looking at something like this, but my lovely gran had one and I definitely remember seeing spider nests in it. Field is particularly spidery. I’m ok with small ones but not the big feckers. Won’t keep anything valuable in there, just old rugs, head collars etc.

Noooooooo don’t 😄 I have a trug thing from Aldi with a lid that clips very tightly, and I haven’t had a single spid yet (touch wood). They’ve sold out now though hence looking for other options.

I live on the wrong side of the pond to give you suggestions where to find this container, but I'm sure there's someone with more useful advice, or maybe a used one they are willing to part with!

The only way to keep out spiders or other creepy crawlies would be to use an airtight box, and that's not great if the stuff inside is a bit damp.

Horse chestnuts are supposed to deter spiders; you could try chucking a handful of those into your storage.

Or mist it regularly with spider repellent spray, which I think is a sort of minty essential oil spray. I don’t know if it works but I tell me kids it does!

I have these, never seen any spiders in them. I keep my mare's rug in one plus a few other bits. They are excellent and you can put a padlock on them if wanted but they do close securely. They stack well too.

Had one this size run up my arm in bed once, even being male doesn't exempt you from being scared of them and it was at that time as it ran up my arm that I realised I had the ability of vertical take off.
I had one as big as this running around my saddlery workshop 2 years ago, almost knew it by name and couldn't catch it. It would sit above one of my industrial sewing machines on the wall almost taunting me. one day I shoved it with a broom to move it on and it fell on to the sewing machine with a thud and scuttled off. I refused to work on that machine for 2 days until I was sure it hadn't decided to wait in it for me.
I'm ok until they run at 90 mph and usually in my direction so know where you are coming from op.
Even picked rugs up from yards to be repaired and washed, stuffed loads of them loose in the back of my jeep, on the way home the tarantulas started crawling out, never got home so fast in my life.
As others have said airtight container might keep them out but don't bank on it!

AAaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh
Ahhhhhhhhhh
AAAAAAAGHHHHHHH
"The tarantulas started coming out" - I can feel myself getting short of breath 😆

I agree, they're ok until they start running around at speed. But having one ON ME is pretty nightmarish. A friend once went to the loo at night and a big one scuttled out from under the seat and ran across her bum. It was years ago now and I still think about that story.

As a former arachnophobe, it surprisingly has been spiders like the one in your pic that have helped me overcome it!
I’m in a rural wild location and these types of spiders have lived in my home for years. Mainly due to them being so high up in 1 room that they’re not easily got at to relocate to the barns.
They’ve become like pets, getting bigger each year, I’m surprised I haven’t named them tbh!
Last night while I was smooching the cat on the sofa, I returned to my desk to look at the massive black smudge in my peripheral vision on the sofa…..and there posed ‘goliath’ to remind me that my last attempt at relocating them just a few weeks ago was not entirely successful!
The one of mammoth proportions sat beside the kitchen bin on the floor the other day also mocked my attempts to have a spider-free zone.

Their mating time is interesting, they stomp about everywhere, usually during the quiet hours of night. It initially always causes a sharp intake of breath to see them marching speedily around me.
A friend was staying once and as we were telling them about the resident spiders, one massive example on cue scurried across the floor, causing an impromptu squeal of operatic tones from my usually nonchalant friend!

My OH has built a soundproof recording booth, which has every single crevice possible sealed, so that sound externally cannot penetrate the booth. Wild bird-song especially. Very thick walls and door. Despite this precision of ensuring no gaps at all….spiders miraculously have even made a home in there! It’s a fully sealed room!
I think they just incarnate sporadically anywhere to be honest!

My fear of them has turned to fondness as they are more scared of me than I of them, and they are excellent at catching the biting flies that are also regular residents for 6 months of the year.

My worst experience though is camping in Germany with friends in a field just absolutely full of those harvest spiders. OMG they were literally everywhere. I’ve blanked most of the memory out as I can’t recall how I coped!!

A sealed plastic box might keep out spiders….for a while. 😬 Regular annual clearing of all items and cleaning the box would ensure none lurk to become ‘Goliath’s’!

I recently got a keter storage unit and although I find the doors to be a bit flimsy, I really do like it. Keeps everything bone dry (not that we've had a whole lot of rain in the last few months).

You could also spray vinegar around it? I learned by accident a few years ago that spiders absolutely do not like vinegar!!!!

If you have horses and all their paraphenalia youll have spiders. I like them but know that I'm in the minority!
Conkers and peppermint oil will deter spiders and mice.
