SPIDERS HELP

For those of you with a genuine phobia I can't reccomend this enough:

http://www.zsl.org/zsl-london-zoo/whats-on/friendly-spider-programme,320,EV.html

It's an afternoon course at London Zoo involving some hypnotherapy and various other things. I went in 2008 and it's changed my life. Before that I would spend every September in a state of terror and the hint of a spider would turn me into a crying shaking wreck. Now I still don't like spiders and would be very happy to never see one again but I'm much more able to cope with them being there, I can sometimes catch them or just ignore them!

Just reading this has sent shivers if dread down my spine. I am terrified and have unfortunatley passed this on to my daughter. A tip I heard about last year was to close the windows in late afternoon. They like the warmth of the walls during the day and then scuttle about looking for company after that. We dont tend to shut the doors overnight but the windows are now shut. I noticed when we did it last year that it was a lot better but that may just have been one of those years. I am trying it again this year and the only big buggers that we have found have been in the kitchen presumably through the door. Good luck you guys glad to know it isnt just me.

Awww.... spiders can't hurt you. They eat insects and are terrified of you!

I hate when I hear people pouring boiling hot water on spiders. That's not necessary and cruel, just stamp on it if you should feel it needs to be killed.

They do a good job of eating flies and other nasty insects, if wasn't for spiders, we'd be swimming in flies and wasps!

Films like arachnaphobia do spiders a great injustice. I'm not fond of them but killing them will never stop them coming back... they can't help it. They have instincts, not brains. They are just trying to survive.

^^This!

I hate to hear of people pouring boiling water on spiders. We have hundreds of them in the house. They get annoying due to the cobwebs every now and then, so I do have a clear out. I empty my bagless vaccuum cleaner and suck up small numbers at a time and empty it out outside. So long as you keep the vaccuuming very brief each time, they mostly survive this proceedure and scurry away outside and unharmed.

Their definetly coming out at the mo.We had one last night running down our curtains and one last week ran across the lounge when we had friends round.he was so large that my friend screamed and shouted 'mouse' when she saw him run across the floor.im terrified of them an scream and jump over things to get away from them.which isnt s good when im nearly 8 months pregnant at mo!i have nightmares about them crawling on me regularly too and jump out of bed screaming. So stupid!

this is horrible! Boiling water!?! WTF?!?! How cruel! Just because they're insects AND YOU CANT HEAR THEM SCREAM doesn't mean they don't count or feel anything!

Any of you who do that should be bloody ashamed of yourselves!!! fair enough you have to kill them because you're scared but do it in a humane manner.

This time of the year is spider mating season. House spiders (those big ones) live on a diet of woodlice and silverfish and require a lot of water to drink (hence hanging around in the bathroom). The only thing you can do is kill them. If you put them outside, they will come back in - unless you take them about 20 metres away in which case they will go into someone else's house. My 100 or so yr old house was infested with them when I bought it - first autumn was terrifying. I've managed to get it down so I don't see so many now. Horrid things. Outside spiders eat flies - inside ones don't.

also, most of the year they lay fairly dormant under floorboards, in cracks etc. They are in the house all year round. When they lay a pod thing in their webs, there will be about 50 or so baby spiders inside - definite case for destroying any little lumps/webs you see!

 at what Stilton posted about someone :o

I am terrified of spiders, and bugs etc.

I can cope with lil spiders, like 2mm big.. any bigger, unless they are in my bedroom, I leave them alone generally. Otherwise daddy comes in with his mug and placemat and puts them in the forest outside (I am 20 btw ) :D

No idea how I will cope whenever I move out.. thankfully out kitchen is quite warm, so they all stay down there and rarely come into my bedroom. If father dearest isn't home I set the cat on them. He keeps the kitchen quite clear too :D

I don't like them either after having one this size run up my arm in bed as I was trying to sleep years ago, I never knew I had the ability for vertical take off until then.

I started using a Vermatik electronic device about 5 years ago, it works, not always 100% but definately a reduction. Here is the link

Ok the photo was not fair :)

I am terrified of them would never kill one, I have spider traps sliding lid with handle one in each room at home and one in the tack room, just to be safe, ive tried sprays and conkers but no there are still there, but as a living creature they have every right to be so i wont kill but i will remove.

you can buy sonic spider repellers - not saying they are 100% effective but might help - reminds me i need new batteries for mine!

Yes, sorry was a bit cruel wasn't it :), it came out bigger than I intended!
I had one of those traps you mention but it wasn't big enough to catch the devils galloping round here so tried a pint glass, still too small!
It catches their legs as you try to put it over them as they are so big. I resorted to flicking one into a bucket one day, then I got the plug in electronic sonic device as mentioned in my earlier post and I get hardly any now.

I am shocked that anyone with an empathy towards any animal (in this case horse) could consider pouring boiling water on any living creature. Sheer cruelty!! If you are going to kill them at least make it as instant as possible.

Stilton, that was unnecessary and just comes across as spiteful!

My fella tried the 'it's more scared of you' line on me. We had a frank and robust conversation, and he is now assured that this is in fact physically impossible.:p

I am getting better, I can now cope with little ones and leave them in place, I can make an attempt at catching medium to large ones in a glass as long as I am wearing big boots and gardening gloves:o but if they come at me all unexpectedly or worse, escape from the glass and charge, I'm afraid I don't just stamp on them, I jump up and down on them:o But as long as they aren't in the living room, the bathroom or worst of all the bedroom, I do leave them alone, I can't relax with one in the room though.

My dog eats mine!!! I was at work this morning and was busy masaging a horse with I notice there was a giant spider on my hand!! I hve never been so freaked out as it was HUGE

Will investigate that device and see if we could got one, Im sorry bigger than a pint glass then I would have to move there is no way I could cope and yes i am the person who got stuck in the bathroom for four hours because one was above the inwardly opening door... (before we got the trap things)

LOL, I'm ok if I see them before they charge at me, it's when you suddenly catch sight of them as they tear past your feet or worse, suddenly run over you!
I find the only way to get them in a glass is to poke their legs to make them draw them in, then you can get the glass over them but if you panic and move the glass when they scare you by moving they can get out and run at you which has happened alot of times so now I use a bucket if I get any but as I said I haven't had many at all since I got the device, in all the house that is as it works via the electric mains cables in the walls.
It's strange though isn't it how they ALWAYS seem to run straight at people who are scared of them!

Always fancied one of those...................until a work colleague got one. Went away for a long weekend and came home to a house full of various crawly, scuttling things! We reckon they must all just make a run for it, straight into living rooms etc.

The worst ones are the ones I always find when getting my rugs down from their hanging places at this time of year when I need to get them cleaned repaired etc.....enormous buggers! Have done half of my rugs already but the other half look the most spidery aaaggghh!!

One of my fellow liveries is totally, hysterically terrified of mice so we have a 'system'! I go to the rugs first and shake for mice, who are heavier and plop out quite quickly. Then, she does the unfolding and brush down to get rid of spiders!
Spiders shooting up your arm after a rug change is almost as bad as spiders in the bed!

There does seem to be a HUGE number of those horrible big ones this year, we've had six in the house over the last four days-yuk! I hate them. I've spent years catching them in glasses & letting them go, but they do just seem to come straight back in. If hubby's not home i just hoover them up these days.
I find the most frightening situation is when i've just thrown a heavyweight rug over a big horse, only to come face to face with the huge black monster that's been hiding on said rug waiting for me............Not looking forward to winter, perhaps i'll stick with natives & go rugless this year!
