Horse is 15.3hh, chuncky cob cross, Gelding, lives out, on bare / limited grazing, 21 years old happy hacker. I deal weight at the moment.

Current feed is hi fi lite and Baileys Lo Cal. Has been for years. for vits and mins he maybe lacking. Been given a bag of spillers happy hoof.

What are your views of happy hoof, tempted to change to it. As with many others struggling with making ends meet and Spillers seems a lot cheaper. The bag of Baileys lasts me about a month, Hi fi Lite around 1.5 - 2 months (only gets half scoop to bulk it out)

Many Thanks

I used to use baileys lo Cal on my 15hh mare and it would last 6weeks. Happy hoof needs to be fed in large quantities to get required minerals and vitamins. I have swapped to spiller's lite balancer which is around £18 a bag and lasts 6 weeks too.

ditto Ali27, chk how much you'd need to feed of the happy hoof, and also compare the vit & min profiles.

If looking to cut costs I would ditch all feed, we are programmed to feed with all the advertising etc. My vet was more than happy for me to leave a mineral lick out for mine, they do have half measure top spec lite but thats only a recent thing and I don't mix the top spec balancer with any thing, Thats the point of it that u don't need to give chaff etc with it, joins don't bolt it and tbh get so little they spend ages savouring each little pellet !

Progressive Earth Pro Balance is fab value for money esp if you have a good doer and just wanted to ensure vits and mins. I just add to a handful of mollasses free hi fi and small amount of fast fibre.
