Please stop taking this horse on the road until you get to the bottom of this. It’s one thing killing yourself and the horse and quite another if he causes a crash and other people get hurt.
it’s not always that easy, however thank you for your concern.

No advice to give you , but fair play to you for sticking with him , not selling him on to be past from pillar to post in his dotage x
He’s so good for everything else, he’s such a sweet boy. He would never do anything to intentionally hurt me or anyone else, he’s just had a rough past and some trauma.

EDIT: He only goes about 5 metres if that before he stops. It’s becoming an issue more so because we are either setting other horses off, and also his galloping on roads isn’t helping his joints

We need to ride on a very quiet road to get to any bridleways and we don’t have a school.
This is only just becoming an issue. Thank you for all your advice. Like i said on the post, please keep this a positive space

This is not a horse I would ride out. If you are taking a dangerous horse out on the road, or indeed anywhere, I hope you are armed with public liability insurance to at least £20m.
I think this could’ve been worded differently, when will horsey people start supporting one another instead of being like this?!

It really is that easy. If you have an accident and someone else gets hurt how will you live with that? You are knowingly taking a pony you cannot control and that reacts to traffic out onto the roads.
Like i’ve said before, it’s happened recently. Please read the post before commenting. i obviously wouldn’t be taking him on the roads if i thought he was dangerous. i’ve owned him 7 years and we’ve always hacked on the roads

Most of the very spooky horses I've known had ended up being diagnosed with some physical issue or other. The trouble with ruling out pain is it's not really possible to do. You can and should look for the obvious things, as listed by other posters already, but obscure things like adhesions - from previous surgery (gelding eg), parasites or inflammation - can cause severe pain but they are hard to find and people rarely look. I would be asking myself if it's fair to him to expose him to situations that tip him over the edge on a regular basis.

You seem to be getting a bit defensive at people trying to help you, the pony is dangerous you can't control him, what happens on the day he's spooked by a car and goes through a windscreen?
You'd be responsible for that as you were not in control.

If you do not like people's opinions then don't post on a public forum where a whole diversity of people frequent and WILL have an opinion

I’m not getting defensive, and i completely understand what everyone is saying. I am saying the reason he was on the road in the first place is because i’ve hacked on the road for 7 years without an issue and this is a recent thing. :)
