Brought horse in yesterday gave her a quick groom and went to lunge her, thought hmm she looks very uncomfortable behind and there was alot of head shaking which is unlike her.

So I stopped her and found a rock solid bony lump on her near hind

Now I am pretty positive its a splint. Its warm, and it definately wasn't there yesterday!! I am going to Burghley so I am just leaving her out til i get back to settle it, and if she needs longer off work then so be it. I've just cold hosed it and chucked her out.

My friend and the YO will be checking on her morning and night and I will ask them to keep an eye on the lump. Its not hot per say just warm so I have told them if it gets hot or swells up to ring the vet, don't bother ringing me to ask just do it haha!

The thing is I have never actually seen a splint behind before? Its on the outside of her hind leg, about 2 inches above her pastern.

Shes barely been ridden so she must have knocked herself good n proper!

Any tips for reducing the size of the splint as I know in some cases they can be absorbed?

Would turning her out in boots help?!

She already has 2 small splints on her front legs, I bought her with them but they are barely noticeable, absolutely tiny!! I was hoping to do some showing with her..

My ned has a hindsplint, got it when he was 5 or 6, (he's 18 now) perhaps knocking his leg on a trough or knocking his legs together. (We don't know but he was on his own in an electric-fenced field with a trough...)

She does have a "line" of fur above it that has been disturbed so it could have been on the metal water trough? Shes not fussed about me poking/touching it, and she isn't lame per say, just reluctant to go forward so I would say its a bit on the tender side of things?

I will ring them now and ask them about DMSO, thank you :)
I am currently resting and hosing for 10 mins once a day. Might stick some boots on her for turnout since this will be splint number 3..
