Hi, I'm new to the forum. I've recently taken on a horse with a fractured splint bone. Does anyone have any experience with these. She has been on box rest for 10 months and is now convalescing in a field. I have heard mixed reports about what I may be able to expect her to do in the future and would appreciate advice from anyone who has had previous experience. :)

That was the advice from the vets/ It does seem like a long time but I don't have any previous experience with splint fractures:o. THey have been following her up with xrays and are optimistic for a "Good" recovary but I'm not sure if that means she will be able to do everything she could before or if for example her jumping days are over. One vet said she will be able to jump and the other is being non-commital. She seems to be painfree walking and trotting round her very small field (vets advice to keep it so small) and no sign of lameness.

My thoughts entirely
my horse fractured his splint bone and was off for no more than 6 months think it was less, he did however return to full compitition career (eventing ) , it all depends on where the splint is fractured, how it heals are there any bone chips and whether the scaring meaning the new bone formation affects the tendons and ligaments.

A friend of mine had a horse that fractured his splint bone, it was 6 months box rest, then 6 months building up from 10 mins sedated in a tiny pen to properly out in the field with gradualy building up in hand walks from month 3, then gradual build up of work from 10 mins in walk under saddle. Now 3 months or so after he was started back under saddle he is doing some canter work and poles but he wont be jumping (unless he hops out of the field again) for arround another 6 months.

Its a front leg. Vet is coming back in June to re-xray so hopefully will get a bit more of an idea where we are heading. Its encouraging to know that a full recovary is a possibility. Even if she was not going to be able to jump it would certainly not be the end of the world.

my horse had a fractured splint bone and had it surgically removed folllowed by 3 months box rest 1 month field rest and then she was slowly put back into work. 3 months later back show jumping and has been sound ever since

Thanks for your responses- all seems encouraging so far- I think because of the site of the fracture it wasnt suitable for surgery - if it had been the recovary would have been quicker -hopefully a little more time and luck and things should be ok.

My horse fractured his left front medial splint bone three years ago, and had the fragments surgically removed. He was on box rest for a month after the op, then in a small "pen" and hand walked. I think i was back on him after around three months, and he was in full work within six. It has never affected him since (touch wood). Had a massive lump post op, but this has gone down over time and he wears Bioflow wraps on his front legs every night.

mine had surgery for it a month ago on one of his back legs, been on box rest, he is now out in the field and walking him under saddle
