Advice please on this one - our mare fractured her splint bone in October last year and we have had her on compression bandaging and box rest since. The vet has come today and declared her able to go out after a final xray (I hope) as long as the leg doesn't 'blow up' when she goes out for the first time tomorrow (sedated as she will hoolie like there is no tomorrow). Hopefully she should be fine. If not and there is a major problem he has intimated that we might need to have the splint bone removed. Mind you he is really positive about her not needing this - it is just the pessimist in me

Now the question - has anyone had this done and if so what was involved, cost etc.

Hi

I have been to the vets with my boy today, he too has fractured hos splint bone. The vet has advised of 4 weeks box rest, then if it has not fused to have the loose part removed. I asked re cost of this, as my horse is insurened but due to his age, the vets fees are limited to £1500 per incident. He advised the op to remove the part that has fractured off will be approx £800-£1000. He then said the horse should be completely sound again. He should then need a further 6 weeks off on box rest.

Good luck, i hope everything goes well for you xx

My mare fractured her splint none some years ago. Unfortunately box rest didn't work so she was operated on to remove it. I can't remember how much it cost but my insurance covered it.

She made a very good recovery and carried on competing.

Well here we are 7 months down the line - we had her on box rest from October to March - luckily she was as good as gold - we them started to hand graze her - that didn't work - she went mental - we then put her in the field for an hour first then increased slowly. She is now out 24/7 for the good weather. The bone seemed to have fused (there were five fractures) - xray in one of my albums if you want to have a look - she is being ridden and so far seems fine - we are taking it very slowly with her - she is a big girl - 17.1 DWB and exceedingly accident prone so hopefully we will be competing her (dressage) in the next month or so.
