On one of my horses the splint just appear one day, horse was never lame on it and the area around splint was never sore, so i just ignored it! Think she was about 7 when it happened...she's 13 now and its completely gone, not even a slight bump can be felt.
Another horse i ride had one come up right underneath his knee and was extremely sore and lame on it. Had to have 8 weeks of field rest (with 1-2 weeks of bute) with it being iced/cold hosed daily and turned out in boots 24/7. It is still quite large but doesnt seem to affect him at all!
Mine had splint when he was 5. Ran him on hard ground - doh!
Was lame so vet came, one week of box rest, cold hosing and also painted some stuff on twice a day, was called something odd like DMSO ? Hat to wear gloves and it stank. But horse was sound and back evening in 4 weeks, bumps went down a bit but he's now 12 and you can still feel them but has never had a problem with them since then
Mine has a couple. Nothing to worry about - unless that is you show at high levels. They are just bone callouses and can infact just degrade away by themselves. Wish M's would dissolve!!! Usually caused by weight bearing stress or trauma - he has a wonky right fore so he weightbears more on his left hence splints. We are working to try and un-wonk him but it's a sloooooooooooooooooooooooooowwwww process.... *sigh*
when I first got Soap his feet were horrid, the farrier at the time took them right back too quick, he threw 2 identical splints in the center of each canon bone thankfully over that year they both completely dissolved, and you would never know he had them.
I did toy with the idea of applying 'silver splintex' but decided against it as he wasn't lame and they weren't near any joints
Have had plenty horses with them over the years and we never do anything with them (then again never had one too close to the knee or anything thankfully - touch wood). I show all my horses, but I never interfere with splints - they almost always go away by themselves over time, so no point in putting the poor horses through hell by blistering or anything.
My Tb through a splint in the field just below his knee!! He was on and off lame for a few days then lame for a week then vet was called. We were given painkillers and anti-inflams for a week and some radol (sp) rubbish to apply to the splint to help the bone fuse or something!! Waste of money if you ask me!! He was on 8 weeks box rest, but he was still lame after so we got a second opinion and it turned out he had also chipped a bone but thats another story lol He was very lucky the splint didnt go into the knee as it was just below his knee.
