I have been reading posts on splints and wondered- Is a fractured splint bone the same thing as throwing a splint. My five year old mare had a splint appear (about as big as half a grape) just inside below knee. My mare has not been lame, and it does not seem to hurt her when I press it. It literally seemed to come up over night. People are saying they box rested for 16 weeks etc.Should I be getting vet involved? I haven't done as I thought it was just something that would eventually go down. I have not worked her for a month. I had a mare once with massive ones and by the time she was seven they had disappeared completely.

Are we talking about the same thing? Replies gratefully received.

Yes as far as i no fracturing and throwing a splint are the same! When mine through one he was sound then lame then sound then lame (over a period of a week or so) i put him on a weeks box rest to see if there was any improvement but just got worse. My vet perscibed another 7 weeks box rest and a week on anti inflams and pain killers and some liquid to put on splint. When his box rest was nearly finished my saddler told me his horse had thrown a splint and all they had to do was 4 weeks box rest then start road work  so i got a different vet out and they agreed with the saddler!
