Hi

My mare fractured her splint bone a couple of years ago - she was kicked in the field.

She had xrays (at home - didn't need to go in) and was on box rest for 15 weeks. She was never lame and only had slight swelling

No adverse effects since then - came back into work with no problems

Fingers crossed for you

x

My mare fractured her split bone some years ago. Box rest didn't resolve it so she had it removed under GA. She recovered very well and went on to resume her jumping career with no problems.

Thanks the vet said that she doesn't need the opp so hopefully fingers crossed and she's just a five yr old so I'm thinking shell heal better just sucks as we were just comin out of BN but any other info is more than welcome :) xx

HI, I know just how worried you must be, I went through the same about 18 months ago. My boy was kicked in the field and had a nasty splint fracture which needed 4 months box rest. Probably the longest 4 months of my life as he hates being in and had buckets of acp to keep him calm! BUT he's never looked back.
Fit as a flea and has never been lame on it and jumps, gallops etc exactly as before. Thinking of you but do be encouraged by all the good stories people are sending you and sure yours will make a great recovery too.

I went through the exact same thing with my boy last winter.

He got kicked in november and was on box rest till feb.

He has made a full recovery and is back in full work and loving it. Try not worry they normally make a full recovery from splint bone fractures as it is not a main weight bareing bone.

thanks shes coming home today so ive cleaned her stable and disinfected it as she wont be leaving it for a while just going to get some toys for her to keep her occupied im glad to hear most horses make full recovery slightly eases my mind :) x

Have seen 3 in the last 2mths. Only one had a guarded prognosis. The other 2 are doing well, one is back in training the other nearing the end of his box rest. The most recent fx was very unstable and no money for full surgery so has had a standing removal - will require approx 6mths box rest but doing remarkably well so far. Most horses go on to do really well. Just make sure to get scans of the suspensory again before you start back in work.

Mine has one on both fronts (he wanted to even himself out :p ) One was there when we got him then he done one last june ish time. It was just below the knee so no one knew if he'd come sound as apparently up that high if they go into the knee joint then lets just say its not good! But thankfully it didnt and hes had no problems with the splints (touch wood) :)
