Hi there...

Our lovely jumping pony threw a splint about a year ago. I caught it early and with the help of lemons and cold hosing I managed to get rid of it.

However, a little later on (around Oct last year I think), she threw another on the same inside fore, but slightly higher up and I wasn't so persistent at trying to settle it that time around, for one reason or another.

Now, some months on, it is obviously cold and hard and she has never shown any lameness on said leg, but I have noticed more recently that it is changing shape and is becoming more elongated and actually seems larger (certainly in length anyway). Its not that we show this pony, but I am keen to know if there is anything you think I can do to try and get this splint to decrease in size (i.e. Splintex Gold, Magnetic Wraps???? anything else??).

As it seems to be changing shape and seems a little more lumpy, should I take my daughter off her back and put her on rest for a while? She is mainly living out now, but comes in for a few hours during the day to rest and stay off the grass?

Any suggestions/proven methods would be welcomed.

Thank you x x

magnetic boots are good and keep cold hosing it while it changes shape. try and keep the harder work to soft ground and just walk on roads etc. unfortunatly its a conformation thing so its likely more could occure. we got a show stallion that just got one as hes so extravigant with his paces, he was going to get one at some point. keep monitoring it. good luck

Thank you for that - when would I apply the magnetic boots whilst she is mainly living out? x

My horse knocked himself as a 4 yr old and got a massive splint, over time it settled and like yours seemed to elongate, to the point its hardley noticeable. He was never lame and I carried on riding him, I just turned out in brushing boots for a while.
Brought him in last week, hes now 12 and hes only gone and caught his other leg :(, all swollen and now the tell tale signs of a splint forming. We bandaged it for a couple of days as it was swollen all round, cold hosed it and the swellings down apart from what is going to be a splint.

they're a nightmare aren't they! lol I think I will try some magnetic boots and cold hosing while it seems to be changing, as suggested...
thanks for your reply x:)

put the boots on overnight while its cool so the legs dont get to hot, you could bandage abit of lemon onto for an hour or so aswell.

I was thinking of getting the New Equine brushing boot type ones, which I seem to remember say you can leave on for up to 22 hours? all very new to me, these magnetic boots
