My 6 year old has thrown a splint

At the moment its a bit tender to touch and she is lame in trot although sound in walk. Its not big, but its definitely not small either. In the good old days we used to use DMSO. I know thats no longer available, but I do still have some. Do you know why it's no longer available? Is there anything else I can do? Would hosing help do you think? Also how long do you think she will need to be rested? So fed up, she is just sound from a kick on the hock and now this!

My mare ended up being on box rest for a month with a splint (she was badly lame though) & cold hosed twice daily. Ask your vet if he's got an alternative to DMSO (hadn't realised you could no longer get it!).

There is something you can still get to put on splints. Friend at my yard used it all the time on her boy but for the life of me i can't remember what it is! Splintex rings a bell, not sure if that's right but maybe if you google the name you might come up with something? Hope this helps

You can still get DMSO from your vet, but it doesn't do anything for Splints really. Splintex works sometimes, but is nasty stuff. Best thing is rest, cold hosing and time.

Hi there,
My boy has two splints on his hind legs! one on each leg!!
Ive been using magnetic wraps which have taken the swelling down quite alot.
Ive also been putting ice gel on (human)
Ive also left a post for advice at the top of the posts.....
