My 7 yo highland threw a splint about a month ago on outside of his leg. He has never been lame on it and vet just advised me to rest it with light exercise. I've just left him turned out ad am happy to leave him out for as long as it takes as he had quite a busy summer so probably needs the rest.
The only problem is the swelling hasn't gone down at all and it is sometime slightly hot. Does he need bute or some sort of anti-inflammitary to take the swelling down? Or will it just go down with time and rest?
Thanks in advance, would love to hear from any other peoples experiences.

Once formed splints don't normally go down in size. My mare threw one about 15 months ago and she's never been lame on it thankfully

After a rest your horse should come back into work fine, just sounds like the splint is still forming hence the heat.

What splint cream? Do you know of one that works on hard splints. My mare threw one last winter when roughed off. It is quite large but she has never been lame but it looks unsightly as she has fine legs. If you know of something that works without causing her any pain I would be very grateful.

Thanks for that, was unsure about useing splintex as don't fancy it blistering, just googled splint cream and it came up with global herbs
'For soothing of the canon bone area, this cream is designed for use with Splint-Aid spray. It calms affected areas and helps blood supply and circulation.'

I'll def look into it. I'm fairly lucky as he is a highland and so plenty of feather to cover it.

I THOUGHT THERE WAS SOMETHING I JUST WAS NOT SURE ON WHERE I HAD RED ON IT. NO I DONT BELIVE IN BLISTERING CREAMS EITHER THAT MUST BE SO PAINFUL!
