It was all going so well, started breaking the 3yo, when today I noticed she's got a lump on the inside of her front leg. Bit lame. Must of done it running around on this hard ground. Worst thing is she had great potential for showing, lovely conformation..... :-( and she was for sale. Just my luck, don't no how long she'll be out. So annoying. Any body been through a similar situation? Any advice?
 
I would rest, if its not too big it might reabsorb, my horses have gone completely, but I did ice them or hose them and rest him and also tried splintex.
 
She's still put in the field. Cold hosed her tonight, but she's still out in the field. Splintex this that a cream? Stupid question maybe, but I've never had a horse with this before. Its abit smaller than a grape. Do you think ppl are bothered about buying young horses with splints?
 
it depends what they want the horse for, if she has very good show potential then yes I would expect they would be concerned about a splint.
Splintex is a liquid that you paint on very cautiously for a few days and then leave it for a few days.
I would hope it doesn't get bigger and keep cold hosing and rest her, but to be fair I have never had a horse lame with a splint, keep an eye on her and if the lameness doesn't settle I would ask the vet to have a look. I don't wish to alarm you, but I had a mare with what I thought was a splint and it turned out to be a fractured splint bone which took ages to heal (6 months)
 
If she's still lame in the next few days I'll call the vet. She is only abit lame mind you. Horses are stressful ....... :-\
 
Get some large cabbage leaves, mash the big vein in the middle of leaves, put on leg and bandage over change daily. Works a treat with splints to get them down
 
My youngster gave herself a splint last year - I suspect by hooning around the field and completely wiping out on the hill, clonking herself as she fell. She came up with huge splint and was 1/10th lame for 3-4 months. The vet came and assessed it twice, but it wasn't a fracture. She just doesn't heal very well. It's gone down a lot now, though - it was a great gravestone of a thing to start with! (Good thing I don't want to sell her :-s). I think it would matter for a show horse... Cold hosing and minimize the risk of further concussion if you can, hopefully it should more or less disappear.
 
Have to say she is a bit of a drama queen, so its hard to no how sore she actually is. But she is lame in walk. Have been cold hoseing and she's in at night, to try and get the weight off her. That and the hard ground prob the cause. Its not big smaller than a grape. Slightly worried now that she might pop one on the other leg as its hot, but I don't no if that's because she's weight bearing more on it to compensate. Cold hoseing it to.
 
Just wondering, am now in similar situation myself although no lameness at all. Did you reduce it by any means? Mine was being aimed at showing so that is why I am more keen to get rid of it
 
I bought my TB with a massive splint on the inside of his front leg. Started working him and has now completely dissapeared u wouldn't know he ever had one :) I think a old teacher of mine at uni told me to put butter on them aswell when they first appear :/ that was a few years ago tho. Good luck tho :) x
