Hi my 3 years old TBX mare has a tiny splint on her front leg, no lameness, doesnt get hot, or cause any problems. As she is still young she is being broken in a sand school, and lightly hacked round the block (she is a saint!). However I just wanted some advice about the future really - she wont do much now til spring to allow her to mature and grow, and then come back in to be schooled again in the spring - will she be able to jump when she is older - i know nothing about splints at all!! Secondly, my neice who rides her is 9.5 stone and the mare is 15.1 at the mo - is she too heavy?
Roast beef dinner for all replies, followed by homemade plum crumble!x

a couple of horses I havew owned in past have had splints and not caused any trouble - but I have never ever worked any of them hard just average really - hacking, jumping, funrides the usual...hope that helps

Splints usually cause no bother. Just keep an eye on it and rest her until it's dormant to limit how big it will be. But once it's done it's done and it will just be cosmetic.
My boy has two on his front and we still compete etc.

Will affect her from a showing point of view however. You can get rid of some of them.

Once a splint has formed and hardened off it won't cause any problem at all. It is when it is forming that can cause soreness/lameness. If it is very big and unsightly try putting goose fat (from any good supermarket) on it, but it will settle down anyway and you possibly won't even know it is there in a few years. Be careful if the sand in the school is deep - could do more damage. Better to ride in a field or on the roads - not easy with a baby, but deep sand is very hard work. There is no long term implication from this.
