my mare has a small splint on her foreleg thats shes had since i can remember. Its hardened off and doesnt cause her any problems what so ever, regularly competes etc. Just wondering if it will affect price greatly when i come to sell her? would an old splint put you off a horse? shes 13 so people may expect it with an older horse? i dont think it would effect my decision but i may just not be very picky when looking at horses lol

Well my friend bought a pony to do workers on for about £6K. About 6mths later she developed a large splint. She was turned away for 4 mths, x-rayed etc. She was never lame. they have recently advertisted her for sale as a PC/RC pony for £3K (just 1 year after buying her).

Even though they have written vet statements and x-rays they have had no luck selling her. However, that could be due to the fact that the market is slow at the moment.

I think if I was to go to see a horse with a splint I would want some evidence from the vet that the horse was sound and that the splint did not affect soundness. If you don't want to show then a splint might not make any difference.

Makes a huge difference though if it is bought as a show horse. Showing people frown upon splints and a 'show horse's' value would drop because of this.

If the horse is for general RC stuff etc. then I don't think it should affect the price that much. It wouldn't put me off.

argh, lol, edit - as above says really

my cob has had a splint for over a year now but it is only visible in the summer when his feathers thin out. i wouldnt sell him as a show horse but it hasnt affected his value but thats because of his colour.
if you explain to people what it is then some wouldnt bother and most vets dont see them as a problem
