Anyone have any experience?
17 yr old pony became lame in trot mid ride Last Sunday. Persistent lameness in trot, sound in walk.
there is a new largeish splint below the knee. He has had a lameness work up and went sound when he had local injected around the split so thought is that it is the splint causing the lameness and plan is to treat for splint and re examine if not better.
I have researched loads on line and there seems to be very little on splints in older ponies . Just wondered if anyone has any experience.
of course what I actually want is someone to pop up and say “ ah yes my horse had that and he was fine in a few weeks “ 🤣

I'm afraid a splint forming in an older horse often indicates another issue. Anything from wear and tear to arthritis (causing an imbalance in the foot )
I had a horse vetted who'd developed a splint as a 12 year old and this is what my vet told me.

Mine developed one as an 8yo last year after kicking himself in the field (had a nice wound to match so we knew was a trauma) and was lame with it for a few weeks. But did settle down and is absolutely fine now, and you can barely feel it.

He actually did it again a few months later, on the same leg, but in a slightly different place. Wasn’t lame the second time round though, but did make the splint much bigger 🙄

One of mine developed a splint below the knee on the outer side of a fore. We had been wading through mud and getting to the road he suddenly went lame so I hopped off and we walked home. It was very large and noticeable but he was only lame for a week although I gave him 6 weeks off and other than cold water hosing and Bute it is so tiny now I can only just feel it and it certainly doesn’t bother him. It was before lockdown so he must have been 9 or 10.
