options? ?

Has anyone any experience of reducing splints?*I've been doing some research and found LLLT (cold laser) therapy recommended but no vets I've spoken to have ever used it.*

Current recommendation is for an injection of depomedrone into the periosteum.....

Does anyone have any experience of either or any better suggestions?*

Thanks:-)

My horse developed large splints on the inside of both front legs as a 6yr old. I took his shoes off and allowed him to sort out his own foot balance and the splints completely disappeared.

This splint is due to a bang on the splint bone, not poor farriery - he's not going barefoot.

Thanks for the suggestions - anyonehhave any experience of either treatment?

I have had this experiance too ,the splints where old and the vet was literally speechless.

My personal experience of messing with splints is it quite often makes the situation worse! Cryo does seem to help resolve them slightly quicker if they're fresh but then lots of new ones resolve on their own, too, so hard to say for sure. It does leave the leg permanently marked, too.

Tbh, most of the horses I've seen in North America who have had splints reduced quickly and thoroughly have actually had surgery!

I know it's not germane to this discussion but I've also seen the ' shoes and splints' connection multiple times and it's one of the reasons I don't like it when people put shoes on a young horse just because they are going to back it.

Couldn't agree more TarrSteps - if a young horse leaps about, it doesn't need to be banging its legs with shoes - or have to put boots on to protect against bangs from the shoes. I'd rather they were a bit footy too when riding out!

ETA I'm not antibarefoot, only to the idea of it for this horse in this situtation !

I didn't mean to imply that! Just one of my random rants about baby horses. :)

I've never heard about cold lasers for splints but I did look into them for something to do with a dog. Very interesting. I do worry about anything with splints though as kickstarting the healing process would surely encourage the body to lay down MORE bone?
