Splints

My horses has a small splint which has just appeared. My vet has advised 3-4 weeks off work and has given me some DMSO to apply to it. I was just wondering if any of you guys would recomend doing anything else to help? I thought maybe try some magnetic boots?

My horse had a splint form when he was five, and never went lame with it. I think we gave him some time off (only a week or so though) and has been fine ever since (now 8).
Should mention that we bought him as a four year old with enlarged splint bones (not splints!) and our vet passed him for this for use for sj/xc providing that we didn't do too much jumping for a couple of years to let him grow into his legs (which he now has). I have always worn prolite tendon boots on him, but this is mostly so he doesn't hurt himself, as HATES to hit a fence, and not for the splint - hope this helps.

My horse developed a splint at the grand old age of 16, on a hind leg! Vet also presribed DMSO and also sonic electro therapy. Not sure if that really helped to be honest, but I also gave him comfrey for a few months. Global herbs do a product called splint x (think thats what it is called). I havent used it myself but have used other global herbs products and have found them to be excellent. Hope this helps.

My horse had two huge splints on the outside of his front legs - they appeared exactly a week after I bought him. Anyway, he wears magnetic wraps at night and the splints have almost vanished completely. You would only notice them if you knew that they were there. Don't know if it is the magnets, but its worth a try!

Gree, i think magno therapy is great. My horse threw an ALMIGHTY one on his back leg, and Hydrotherapy and magno bots has helped reduce it a little bit.

You could try Pure Distilled MSM. It is a powerful anti inflammatory and is particularly useful for splints and windgalls. it is really reasonably priced and definately worth a go as it is quite heavily backed scientifically. have a look on www.riaflex-equine.co.uk it will give you a bit more info on it.

i have an ex racehorse who ran 17 races and retired at 5yrs with very clean legs. I have owned him for 8 months and he was turned away for 3 months at first and very slowly brought back into work with light hacking and schooling. He has now developed a very large splint on a foreleg and was lame for 2 weeks. He was box rested and had ice packs on 3 times a day as well as danilon. my vet suggested applying splintex which i did but it is still massive despite all our efforts. he is sound now and back in work but just blemished! I guess he must have kicked himself as he has not worked on any hard ground or roads or jumped yet!!

I had a mare that had a week off and when she came in had 2 golf ball sized splints just under her knees. She was never lame and on vets advice just ignored them, no treatment etc.
2 years later and they have virtually disappeared. Good luck.
