Sorry I know this should probably be in Vet! What is the quickest anyone has ever known Splints to come up...as in I assume I'm right in thinking its impossible for them to come up quite big in the space of an hour? They came up in an hour, very big localised lumps...feel solid like splints do not fluid swellings. she's completely sound but there is a fair bit of heat! any ideas???
luv Amy xxx

You should apply an ice pack under an elastic pressure bandage for 15-20 minutes, 2 or 3 times a day. That will help minimize any more damage, and will normally reduce the size of the splint within a week. You could also cold hose for the same length of time a few times a day.

That could almost definately be splints, my horses came up over night and i have got the horse with the worlds biggest splints. Are they on different legs or the same, how big and what excercise did she do prior to them coming up? I would cold hose for a few days for sure.

its the same after cold hosing...staysounded last night and reduced it a bit but nothing else has helped bring it down any further. like i said 100% sound and no pain reaction when i poke or prod...but she would be hardy enough that way!

When you say "they" how many are there? Is there more than one on the one leg?

Wot kind of size are they? and where abouts on the cannon bone?

they're on both front legs!! she jumped at a show on geltrack so its not jarred...its weird her legs were perfect when i took boots off after jumping and 40mins later had these 2 lumps on them about 3inches long and 1.5 inches wide and out from her cannon bones!!!

one on each front leg...kind of on inside front corner if you can imagine where i mean! i've seen splints loads before but never like this! no one in the yard has seen anything like them before!!

That gel track is a very hard surface mind you, I personally dont like it. Definately sounds like splints. If you cold hose and rest now, with ice pack under bandage for 15 mins twice a day I should imagine they should go down but if worried just give your vet a call tomorrow am. I carried on working my horse because he was sound but there were other medical reasons for this. But it may be the reason why my horses are so large. Good luck and do let us know how it goes.

Could you post a picture?? I would but havent got any of my boys, the vets were astonished when they saw mine and they took pictures. My boy are about 3 inches long and start just below the knee on the inside of both forelegs and stick out like half a tennis ball. Does that sound like your horses??

cool thanks i emailed pics to vet this evening. he's off this weekend cause its a bank holiday here but he's going to look at them and ring me back! just a bit befuddled as they're not like any splints i've ever seen before!! she's an oddball in every other respect though so she would throw up weird splints lol!!!

Thanks pet will do...i figure i'll just do what everyone suggests! as one of my friends says in this instance better to do too much than too little!!!

she's 11 years old. i'll try post pics. i emailed pics to vet from yard pc not home one so i'll have to try load pics onto home one!! em sound a bit like your horses alright
