Split Coronet Band

Hello, just wondering if anyone has experienced a split coronet band before? I did an event with my young horse yesterday (intro) did very well bless her, placed 5th and she isn’t easy! But when we got back from XC she had blood around her foot, my initial reaction was she must have hit it jumping and cut herself, but after cleaning it all up, it looks more like a split, about 2 inches from the back of her heel around the coronet band and it looks quite sore, although she isn’t lame, no heat or swelling, and she’s not worried about me touching it. The top of the hoof just below the split is also quite soft. Vet is coming out tomorrow but just wondering if anyone has experienced this before? I only have the one horse and haven’t had many foot/leg problems before so just wondering if anyone has any advice? Many thanks

It sounds very much like an abscess blow to me to be honest, although of course without actually seeing it I couldn't be sure. Obviously the fact that she had just done cross country does indicate that it is a cut rather than an abscess blow, but the description of the actual wound indicates an abscess blow - was there lots of blood and / or any pus or anything that you could see? If there was quite a bit of blood then it probably was a cut rather than abscess - bit difficult to say.

Horses do often get abscesses which go undetected and burst out themselves around the coronet band or bulbs of the heels and it is possible that the strain on the hoof doing the cross country helped it burst out if there was something lurking, but I would expect too see at least a bit of lameness when the abscess was at bursting point as it were!

I guess the easiest thing would be to put some pics up if you could get any as that would be easier for us to see - I may have a completely different picture in my head to what you are describing!! (I most probably do, knowing me ;-)!)
 
that exact same symptoms happend to my 1st pony. it was an abcess. it healed very well and quick. was not really an issue.
