Merlins lower third of his mane has never recovered from last winters rugging.

While pulling the top half today I noticed that this third is really coarse (the rest is coarse too though) and all the ends are really badly split, there are also a lot more white hairs in this part of his mane than in the upper two thirds.

He wears a Rambo Duo rug 24/7 as he lives out all winter... with a neck cover and it seems to be where the neck of the main rug would sit.

Bearing in mind its not a heavy rug, would it have damaged his mane permanently..... or should I be looking at adding biotin to his feed to boost the hair and horn growth.

He only gets a handful of chaff at the mo as he is out on good grass.... and he will go back onto his vit suppliment soon as the grass goes off????

Any ideas for me???

I wont be using neck covers this winter as I'm sick of regrowing manes! I'd snip the split ends off with scissors so they don't keep splitting. I wouldn't have thought you needed to add any supplement. Can't help with the white hairs - wouldn't have thought they were caused by the rug.

I did take them off today but it made little difference as the mane is all coarse and almost frizzy

He used to have a lovely mane and now its gross.... the top part wont lay down and the bottom wont grow.

I have pulled it all very short today as if it is going to insist on being a mohawk, it may as well be a proper one.... and not a 8" long one
