I can tell it is coming colder as every year with out fail my finger ends split, top corner next to the nail, and by heck is it sore

I`ve tried E45 cream, Neutrogena, Dove hand cream, Udder cream, Vaseline ... i`ve tried leaving it on over night under cotton gloves .... I've tried drinking more in case it`s because i`m dehydrated, but i do drink a fair bit anyway (i like my camonile and peppermint teas and have them in bucket mugs as well as drinking water) and it never happens in summer/when it`s warmer.

So who else suffers with it, and is there a cure out there ... i`m not a wuss by any means but by heck it smarts a bit !!!!!

I have suffered with this every year for as long as i've had horses! It is very painful and i have tried everything, oils, Vaseline, expensive hand creams but nothing works! If i wear thin gardening rubber gloves it helps a little bit (the waterproof type!) but i also get very bad cracked heels! This makes me hobble and i have not found a cure for that yet either!
Barrier cream also helps a bit!

Hello, I'm the hand cream queen in the south east!! I've tried everything in the past & nothing much has helped. I have recently come across O'Keeffe's Working Hands - I think its brilliant. I have been using it for about 3 weeks & would not go back to anything else. I got mine from ebay.

You could try Mane 'n Tail Hoofmaker, it was originally designed to keep hooves in good condition (honest). I got it from the chemist, it was about 8 euro if I recall. It's good for dry and cracked skin and is good for fingernails too.

Thanks for your ideas so far :)

I found this for you as well:

O'Keeffes do a working feet and well as a working hands ... i have bought the working hands to try, but here`s a twin pack for you ;)

I had this problem too - also with my toes splitting in the winter - it is so painful, I know. You have tried what I was going to suggest, but, I discovered one of the worst things for drying out your hands is washing up liquid. I am very careful now when using detergents as it seems to strip all the oil from your skin. Also, don't leave your hands wet in the cold weather - carry a hand towel in your grooming kit so you can dry them straight away, and keep them warm at all times - fingerless gloves are a godsend for this.

Flexitol. Made for diabetics with a high percentage of Urea. They make stuff for hands and feet. Only thing that really works. You can get it in some medical type pharmacies or amazon sell it. Awesome stuff.

You need some waterproof snowboarding gloves-you can put your hands in troughs no problem and lovely and warm. TK max usually has them at this time of year.

The best thing I found by chance is the netext muddy barrier cream for the horse, I have my hands in ice cold water in the winter as I help to make door hangings.
Works a treat, good job because before it got so bad I couldn't bend my fingers!

My hands and fingers crack and get sore I find the wet haynets do the most damage, I find wearing gloves is the only way to stop it mainly gardening or rubber gloves do the trick, its the ground in black dirt that gets in the cracked bit I cant stand nothing gets that out so gloves work best.

I use that Norwegian hand formula, if my hands get really bad I'm often found smearing it on my hands, putting disposable rubber gloves on then a pair of socks over them overnight, works really well until I finish my book an try to turn my touch on/off light off lol

I lost the end of my right index finger when I was 14 and the grafted skin always splits like a snake slothing its skin I recomend neutrogena or for the real deal Udder Cream is tops and smells lovely.

i get this every year and am never prepared. yes it hurts a lot!!!!! i use an old fashioned remedy, germoline ointment(the pink one) and a plaster for overnight it helps with the soreness and if you wear a medical glove on top when you are doing haynets or anything wet you can keep the plaster on but otherwise just keep replacing with fresh ointment and plasters.. this works for me every year, i just wish i remembered to use gloves when im at the yard BEFORE i get splits in my fingers and thumbs!!!!

The udder cream from the US, has a different consistency from the pinkish udder cream and is very good for chapped anything and protection. You can find it on ebay. I used to buy it to put on my dog's paws during winter. xx

I used to have this problem when the children were small and I was changing nappies all the time and continually washing my hands. And yes, just like you, with horses now the weather is getting colder my hands immediately start getting dry and the cracks will come unless you take action now! Luckily I have found a prevention - always always always wear gloves when out doing anything with the horses, these are brilliant: http://www.rideaway.co.uk/HY5-MULTIPURPOSE-STABLE-GLOVE
I have 5 pairs that I wash and rotate. This not only prevents the cracks but keeps away the 'horsey hands'! Then every evening, and whenever you've over done it and your hands feel dry use some of this liberally: http://www.boots.com/en/Neutrogena-Norwegian-Formula-Concentrated-Hand-Cream-50ml_1505/
It doesn't feel very nice but it works. The hand creams that feel nice don't work unfortunately. The other thing that is quite good if you feel there is a crack developing is some cuticle oil, or worse case scenario...cornucresine!! But that is not attractive!!

If you do get a crack, as splashgirl says, use this : http://www.boots.com/en/Germolene-New-Skin-20ml-1-bottle_862956/ and it normally holds it together for a few hours whilst you shower or whatever so you don't cry with pain when water gets in!!

The gloves that Tronk links to above are ace

Showa also make waterproof rubber gauntlets which are reasonably warm and are excellent. Their thermal gloves are great too. Im a Showa fan!
