Hi all,

I hope you can help. I tried to get a picture to show but it didn't really show up. My horse has a split right down the centre of one of his frogs. It's quite deep and the edges of where it has split are quite flappy (I hope I'm describing this ok?)

He seems to be walking fine on it and isn't in any pain when I touch it. He has to walk over quite a stoney surface and haven't noticed any limping or lameness.

I was wondering if anyone knew what this is or what caused it? Before I call a farrier or vet out to have a look as there might be something I can put on it that will help it heal?

Do you mean a split like the picture here?

Cleantrax to kill any infection and then twice daily flushing with Milton until its cleared. Whats his foot balance like? Mine ended up like this as he had absolutely terrible feet with no heels, and so contracted his feet are tiny for his size. Its responded pretty well to treatment though :)
 
Thrush causes it.

Second the Cleantrax, and if he is a fidgeter worth investing in the designed boot they do too, otherwise it all becomes a bit messy.

However, I think shoes have to come off, so might need to take that into consideration.

I used CleanTrax, and use Pure24 as a followup (1st week alternated between this and Daktarin powder spray daily). Noticed a difference after a week, and now 4 weeks on, completely gone and how they should be :)
 
Feed 50gms micronised linseed and a good mineral supplement like pro earth pro hoof/ forageplus / equimins / feedmark original. Good feet need good nutrition, once you have a problem it is best to treat both the symptoms and the disease.
Ask farrier to come out and clean it up.
I would stable a few hours per day [clean bedding] and feed soaked hay, to reduce sugar in diet, do not feed molasses chaff or other rubbish.

Flush with 3% hydrogen peroxide and stuff with sudocrem, on cotton wool if it will hold it. Works a treat.
