My 5 yr old ID x has never had the worlds best feet but he has been over due the farrier now as I had no joy getting hold of him. I called my boy over tonight and am gutted to find he is lame and his off hind hoof is now split right up :( The farrier is coming out tomorrow at 12.30 but Im sick with worry and stress.
The new farrier thats coming out has told me not to panic and that she will sort him tomorrow. There is no heat or swelling etc but should I be getting the vet out or wait til the farrier has been..???? :(

Try not to worry yourself too much, I'd wait until the farrier has been & see what they advise / can do before moving onto the vet - let us know how you get on x

I would wait for the farrier too tomorrow. Unless of course the lameness is severe.

My mare's feet are normally fantastic - but this summer they are cracking too and I nearly cried the other week but my farrier just laughed at me and said that nearly every horse he is dealing with has worse hooves than normal this summer because of the rubbish weather.

I am sure the new farrier will sort things - and if the crack is going from bottom to top then it's easily sorted.:)

Ok farrier has been. She says because the hoof is splut it has been pinching when he weight bears. Its been trimmed and sorted and he hascsome bute. She will come back out in a week but he already looks more comfy :)

Good news that he's more comfy already. What a relief, I hope he's fully sound soon. :)

It might be worth PM'ing Oberon for her feeding for healthy hooves info.

Glad he's feeling better :). I'd second the suggestion to investigate his diet. Healthy hooves don't split, regardless of the weather.
