Hi Has anyone out there had any experience of dealing with a horse with a split hoof. To cut a v. long story short, a horse I have on loan had a coronet injury, subsequent surgery that got rid of infection but did not work as well has hoped and has resulted in the likelyhood that the hoof will now grow split - the vet called it a false quarter. The vet said it can be managed with bar shoes and she should be able to return to work given time, but just wondered if anyone has actually had experience of this. Thanks

My old horse has a false quarter in a front hoof. Hers was caused by a coronary band injury as a youngster. I got her as a 7 year old and still have her as a 25 year old. She is still ridden. The main problem I had initially was keeping a shoe on. My farrier used normal shoes but couldn't get a nail in the hoof behind the crack so the shoe only had 4 nails in. I only used to last 1/2 hour hunting before she lost a shoe. She has had Farriers Formula most of the time I have had her and this has helped the horn quality. She has never had bar shoes but has double toe clips all round. At one time the crack got quite bad and I used to have to get the vet to put a filler in it when she was shod. The vet thought she had an infection in it so I had to use Iodine. These days I use the Formula 4 Feet disinfectant a couple of times a week. Despite her foot problem this horse raced a bit, did alot of endurance rides, gained me my hunt buttons and did all sorts of riding club activities. Oh, and she bred 2 foals as well. She's a TB. Sorry I've rambled on a bit here!
