Sheath.
My cob was lame on Thursday, instructer said he was snatching his back leg up. I knew his Mallanders and Salenders were playing him up, so i re-applied pig oil and sulpher to his legs .
Also decided to clean his sheath, i do it about once a year as i dont like to over do it, anyway, loads of creamy sticky gunk came out, whilst having a good look up there i noticed some small splits or cracks on it which appeared to have been bleeding and the blood had dried up, not huge amount, a tiny amount really. I couldnt actually clean his willy only the first bit. anyway cleaned what i could, and put some aloe vera gel up there and gave it a good rub in.

Left it alone yesterday and had a look today, i saw a bigger split there, not sure if it was there before or not its about 1.5" long, looks like a paper cut, so got some sheath cleaning wipes and gave it a wipe and put some more aloe vera up there, the whole sheath is very slighty swollen, but he's quite happy for me to clean and attend it. hoping its just coz ive been fiddling around up there. The skin thats cracked is pink skin (his sheath is a mixture of pink and dark skin) and havent seen any red skin although appeared to be a bit of blood again. i dont think its infected. Should i leave nature to take its course and heal itself up? should i keep putting aloe vera gel up there everyday? or do i give it another good clean with warm water, sponge and sheath cleaner? i dont want to irritate it any more. Is this common in horses with pink sheaths? sorry for such a long post...

Not sure why it should be split, but one reason is if the smegma has cut into it as it wrinkles back into the housing

Smegma can get razor sharp.

To be honest I wouldnt be putting anything up there which is not designed for willies..... ie sheath cleanser..... It could be that which is making it sore

Get some proper sheath cleaner and see if he will drop it out for you to get a proper look at... (not very likely) at least the proper stuff will soften the yukky bits and wont hopefully irritate it more.

I personally wouldnt clean at all ever! I cleaned my horses "one" once with a decent sheath cleaner - ended up with a vets visit as his sheath had an allergic reaction and it swelled right up

So I never do and never have any problems, after all they dont in the wild...
