Why oh why to parents insist on buying their spoiled kids a horse, thinking the kid is the next ellen whittaker and when the kid had practically pulled the horses teeth out hurtling it into huge fences and knackering its legs do they think they can just dispose of said horse because hes cra* and little miss showjumper needs something better. Poor horse is now a wreck! It absoloutley infuriates me and I see it time and time again! poor poor horse.

Rant over.

So true. It infuriates me too.

prime example, i was talking to a friends daughter about new pony and she was like ''god id never have an unbacked horse. whats the point in that? why dont you just buy a backed one for a few grand or something''

i just thought 'oh get back in your box you idiot'!

and the typical ''oh well my mummy bought this but he was quite obviously mis sold, his manners are atrocious and he is hardly rideable and ive only had him 6 months!!!''

IMO you buy a horse for life unless you are competing and you outgrow certain horse or he has been taken to the bast of his ability with you and your ready to move on. This poor horse had so much potential as a nice riding club horse and now he is ruined with so many injuries to his lets so they will just flog him on and get another one to ruin.

Yeah that annoys me too! It also really annoys me when kids who've had a few lessons nag their parents for a pony, then after a few weeks they get bored of it, decide it's too much hard work and the poor pony is forgotten about and is visited about once a month. Especially when there are so many kids out there who will spend all their free time mucking out and working, just so they can have a free half an hour ride. Some kids don't know how lucky they are

Errrm, out of interest, presumably these people have someone giving them lessons, has the instructor not pointed out the problems? If not why not? If so did they continue teaching them when their advice was ignored?

This is so true!! But the parents annoy me even more, for example:

The said child at my yard had outgrowen her 12.1hh pony that was as good gold, could be left in the field for months then would go out and do a clear round no problem. This child is the sort that will leave her pony in the field for months and then think it ok to take it out for a days hunting!! Her parents were not impressed when I asked them if they'd ever heard of the term "hunting fit".

I saw a nice sane looking middle weight early teens pony club pony for sale and showed an add to the parents who said it was ugly! Anyway they then bought her a 14hh ArabX that was very beautifull but not exactly a suitable second pony! After being galloped at jumps and yanked in the mouth it developed a habit of bucking at after the child was sent to hostpital with mummy and daddy saying it was all the nasty ponies fault and that it couldnt jump. The pony was given to me for a while after I asked to have a go at riding it. This pony then went on to compete up to 3"9 being placed every time.

But Mummy and daddy soon bought the girl her first horse an ex-race horse, a disastor waiting to happen. Funnily enough after a few months the girl lost intrest completly and her Dad started riding him. Again this annoyed me this horse was only small and her dad was not, after months sitting in the field he then went for a moor ride. So an ex-racer that hadn't been ridden in months out onto open moor funnily got a bit excited and the dad went to hostpital.

Rant over, if they had just bought a sensible horse that may not nessesarily look pretty none of this would have happened!

Wow... I have honestly never seen this done and we've got around a bit- junior BS, senior on a ticket, BE, PC, RC. You name it, we've done it! I've seen ponies bought who were unsuitable, but they tend to be sold on again shortly afterwards or loaned out. You must all be very unlucky, as are the ponies in your area.

Around where we are, it is usually the instructors that are the worst offenders! I know the family of a teenager, who are not well off. The kid's instructor 'found' a real quality little show-jumper and together they proceeded to put so much pressure on the parents to buy the horse that they eventually caved in and put themselves into a lot of debt to do so.

Fast forward 6 months and the kid is scared to ride the horse because it is such a handful (talented, but not a ride for a teenager), the horse barely gets out of the stable and it is for sale at a huge loss.

Of the horse, the child says 'I hate it' and 'I wish it was dead'.

Nice.

Seen this happen quite a few times as well :/ Also parents thinking they know better than the instructor and buying unsuitable horse/ponies who the kids end up terrified of.

Im only 17 but have seen this happen!!

I started riding at 4 and my mum had horses as had my gran, I never asked for a pony but was bought one at 8, and I still have him now, he is the best childs pony ever even if he is a grumpy old sod!! (he is now 22)

I get what people mean about buying a pony then child rapidly selling for another one when the pony hasnt really done anything wrong,

all my ponies/horse have homes for life, apart from comp ones,

my ex Ponies UK winner I sold as he was 13.1hh and I had outgrown him and I showjumped not showed and he wasnt the fastest,

then I sold Roxy as I gave up after starting secondary and doing high jump nationally and didnt have time for the ponies too!! But you see so many kids with hundreds of different sports !!
