Our girl is a 4yr NF, turned out 24/7
Recently she has started spooking at rain, in her field she will race across to the hedge to stick her nose in it when it starts to rain, seems she doesn’t like her face being wet.
Sunday it started to rain while she was on the yard, our girl was rearing and bucking, throwing every trick in the book, it was a real toddler tantrum, did manage to hold her on the lead rope, but she did more of the same until back in field.
She has done the same today whilst being shod. Farrier says he will try again tue.
In the meantime have any of you guys got any advice to get her through this behaviour? Any good ones plus any ‘don’t dos’ would be useful. It’s a weird one!
Thanks

mines the same - squeels and bucks when its raining and shes being led form the field

fine when being ridden as shes MADE to deal with it (point caps....!)...

tell her to man up and get on with it :)

Mine was like this to ride but since I have been firm with everyone of his spooking fits and given him some serious schooling he has gritted his teeth in an Arab sort of way and got on with it!

It can be a sign of the back/neck being out of alignment. One of my horses behaved like that and once nearly beheadded me under a tree trying to get out of the rain.

Horses with back/neck problems often have ultra sensitive skin, they may not like being groomed either.

My horses behaviour stopped completely after he was manipulated under anaeesthetic. Afte that he was never bothered by the rain again.

Thanks for that, yes she has been very rude, pushing the boundaries the last few weeks, so you have sussed the behaviour out. Glad its just something i can work on easily enough come rain come shine! thanks again folks!

If she is doing it in the field too then my first thought would be sensitive skin (possibly on the face if that is what she hides in hedge). Interesting idea from Evelyn... Sunburn/sweet itch also possible at this time of year...

Shes a lovely horse, very clever. I get her settled in one direction, then off she goes changing the goal posts - she works me hard confusing me with her behaviour, i'll give her that. But hopefully if i get things right now she will become a well adjusted young lady. Fingers crossed.
