Anybody know of any studs / yards (UK or Spain/Portugal) who produce Iberians as competition horses - ie. not the usual pure dressage. ?? Im pretty sure last year at Badminton the commentator said that the pure Luso who did that was from a yard who bred sport ones...?

Failing that, any who breed Iberian partbreds?

Thanks

Jester's Quest isnt a pure bred I dont think.
lusos are pretty versatile-the only reason you dont see them jumping is because people who buy them dont tend to jump. never met a luso yet who couldnt/didnt jump and they are careful, athletic and bold. there's a Grade A showjumper, Sandokan, down south-son of Novilheiro. not sure if they have mares though. you can get yourself nicley bred 2/3 yos for about £2k in Portugal if you know the right people-go for the sporthorse type rather than the baroque.

So you think that as long as I dont go for the heavier traditional ones then any of the lighter ones have good enough potential for non-dressage? I'm thinking Im going to have to sell my Luso x TB maybe at the end of this year and he's such a fabulous horse I want the same sort again! Love the Iberian attitude! But want one who would be capable of 1.20 BSJA and BE Novice (eventually of course), so not sure if I need one bred specifically with jumping lines or if most of them are capable?

most andalusians i know can jump! you would want a finer type one rather than a hevaier traditional one. North Farm andalusians normally have a some in and they are quite often more sport horse types. it just that many dont have much jump experince as they dont do a lot of jumping in spain. but it might be worth a call!

I truely disagree with that!!!

The reason they don't do a lot of jumping is that they are not bred for jumping, but as work horses so don't get the opportunity to show their stuff.

Every Andy I have had and ridden could jump, but 1.20m is a big ask of any breed, whether they are bred to jump or not, so I would keep fingers crossed you pick a good un - mine did very well over 1.20s but I would say, as a rule, they are the exception as most are more 1m horses.

SANDOKAN is pure bred Luso breeding pure and partbred sport horses. He is not a Grade A Showjumper though?? ... only because he has not been campained. He is Grand son of Novilheiro, His mother was by Hortelao ...who was European Working Equitation Champion. At a mock evaluation as a 4 yr old he was recommended to breed Eventers. He is only 9 yrs old so his offspring are just about to come of age to compete.
He does stand at stud but only to proven mares. He stands in Northampton. He does have a fantastic temperament and is talented. He has another homebred sport horse x foal due any day. If you are looking for pure bred luso of the sport horse type look for Viega x Tavares lines.

The more 'modern' andalusians can turn their hoof to anything, and the partbreds can be really useful, especially the Tres Sangres (Anglo Arab/Andy), never met one yet that I did not like. I bred two from my Anglo and both were talented jumpers, which was a shame as I wanted dressage horses

There are a lot of people breeding partbreds (sadly I do not anymore) this link may help - it is a list of UK breeders, some of whom breed both partbreds and purebreds
