Hi, I bought some long Sportabac turnout socks from my local horse shop for my 16.3hh TB on Wednesday night. He's had them on for a day & checked yesterday afternoon & one has ripped! The bottom velcro strap has completely gone & the boot/sock is no longer secure on the leg.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Bit worried as they were £30.00 a pair & so far haven't lasted the day. I emailed Sportabac but no reply as yet from them. Should I just go back to the horse shop with them & explain the situation?

What do you think? Are there any hardier boots/socks on the market that I could buy that will stand up to the task better?

I've never used them so don't really know but would be gutted if they had broken after one day !! I would definately take them back and see if they will exchange them.

Ive had sportabrac boots and equlibrium and imo the sportabrac ones were def the tougher of the two!! But still not brilliant but the equilibrium ones were shredded.
I would take them back to saddlery as they are not fit for the purpose they were bought for ie turnout.
Good luck

Exactly the same thing happened to mine last week - have bought a pair of Derby House ones which seem tought, but dont know if they will last any longer.

Dont think the "fit for purpose" argument will work but maybe worth a shot if the tack shop can get a refund from Sportabac.

My horse shredded a brand new Equilibrium Hardy Chap within 20 minutes of being turned out. I raised the issue with Equilibrium and they sent me a replacement pair. However I sold them on ebay as I wasn't happy with the material they were made from, and I bought a full set of Equilibrium Close-Contact Chaps instead, which are twice the price unfortunately.

The Close-Contact Chaps are the sort that are made from breathable stomatex, and they are closely tailored to the leg and don't soak up water as badly as the neoprene type turnout socks, so they stay in place much better. It's when these things slip down that they get trashed.

I have also turned out in SMB boots, which stay in place particularly well though they don't go as far up or down the leg as Close-Contact Chaps.

I've got several pairs which have all been well used over the past few years and have withstood some excessive field antics! I've had two where the neoprene has been shredded, but the velcro etc has remained intact...... deffo send them back!

I've found all the turnout boots useless. They either rip, sag like Nora Batties stockings or suck the mud up through the bottom until I wonder how poor neddie manages to walk! The best thing I've found is cheap over reach boots (the plastic ones with velcro fasteners) teamed up with SMBs or just decent brushing boots.

I bought 4 Sportabac boots for my horse, my horse has ripped both fronts so i now only have 2 usable ones. I blamed this on my horses though, surely it is not sportabacs fault if a horse destrys something?
Before they were ripped they didn't sag, absorb mud etc.

As I mentioned previously my horse trashed a Hardy Chap within minutes of putting it on! This was the left leg, the right leg is still almost as-new. Equilibrium replaced them from the photos and didn't require a return.

So if anyone is one Equi-Chap short (size 3/Large) PM me and I'll send it for the cost of postage. (I also have the torn left leg but think this is beyond repair, though may be useful for spare velcro tabs).

These are the thick Hardy chaps, not the thin stomatex close contact chaps.

I had these and they were useless, they were like nora batty stockings the first day. I never bothered trying them again. They were in my xmas stocking and didn't have the heart to say they were awful or ask to send them back.
