Just for fun - before the start of the eventing season, I want to do a showing class (havent competed all winter) - either a Small Ridden Hunter, AND /OR Open Riding Horse. He is 16.1 (just) dark bay TB, - frequently thought of as a mare because he is "pretty" = he is nicely schooled, jumps (obviously) and has been hunting most of the season. He is looking fit, with a good topline - but not ribby, as I understand most judges like horses well covered?

What would we have to do in both classes? (if we are eligible to enter!?!?!)

What would I have to wear?

and What should I dress him in?

Many thanks in advance for you help and guidance to a showing virgin!!

Sml hunters are 15.2hh so i would not do that class.
For riding horse classes you want a paterned browband with a double or pelham. You should wear a Blue jacket with stock or tie with hacking jacket-which ever you have.

Blue jacket and Patey is possible - or do we have to wear chin straps for showing these days? White stock I think is smart - is this correct?
beige breeches, long polished boots - Spurs/No Spurs?
Whip? = if so what sort?
By patterned brow band - you mean with ribbon rather than "bling?" - can do ribbon - have royal blue and gold from racing days.
- Can do either double or pelham - which is more correct?
I have a modern jumping saddle/dressage synthetic/or more "old skool" GP saddle - which to wear and what underneath please.

I feel like an idiot not knowing! :-S - only ever did one showing class as a child - my hunting pony- we did WHP and he bit the judge (who did spend silly time examining his nost of all things!!)

You should never wear a stock for showing unless an evening championship class. Hat with chin if possible.

A simple leather whip/cane

Double bridle is more correct

Spurs should always be worn in adult showing classes unless novices.

As straightcut a saddle as possible the GP might be best. The jumping saddle will hde too much shoulder. A numnah to match horse if you have to wear one cut as close to saddle as possible.

Riding horse classes are about manners as well as conformation so make sure your show is smart and crisp.

Light weight hunter

Hacking jacket, tie, navy hat or beagler (smarter but often not permitted at local level), corn coloured jods, brown gloves and showing cane and black boots with spurs

Horse double bridle with flat noseband and brown saddle with very discreet matching cloth.

Ridden horse is the same but with a pretty browband.

Horse should have a plaited (sewn) mane and pulled tail

Good luck

For both hunters and RH you need hacking jacket, shirt & tie, beige/cream jods, long boots and spurs, brown gloves, cane, hairnet and navy hat.

You want plain workman like brown tack for hunters, double or pelham whihever your horse goes best in. Horse should be plaited, trimmed and pulled. For Riding Horse you will need a fancy browband (ribbon) and quarter markings.

As he jumps, consider a working hunter class?
Also ensure he is ok with judge ride - may be a larger or smaller person than his normal rider.

Tweed with shirt and tie, cream/beige/canary jods/breeches, with long black boots, spurs, brown whip or cane, brown gloves and a navy hat, you will have to check the rules for the show you plan to go to as to weather you can wear your Patey.

Horse should be in a brown bridle, of a width that suits, with a pretty browband for RH classes. A saddle that is more straight cut would show off your horses front better.

Looking on a photographers site, such as Real Time Imaging will help you get an idea of how best to present your horse
