Has anybody used one, for a particular problem. I have a weaker left side (upper body) and it is the side that Sov likes to lean on, and it is becoming difficult to 'do' anything as at certain points my left arm is almost paralysed or fixed.
I want to get some help from somebody who understands the dynamics of riding.
Help folks, I can go pretty much anywhere in the North West if needs be???

Yes for lots of things riding related and not!

I think if you have got a decent physio with a wide range of experience they should be able to tackle most riding related problems as they are not really any different from other sporting injuries / weaknesses. Its all biomechanics and having things working evenly / same ranges of movement both sides etc etc.

From my experience of the Physios who work with sports people they seem to be more of the get on with it variety and appreciate it isn't always possible to take time out from your sport or at least take a balanced approach between resting (with rehab exercises) where its vital and then getting you going again ASAP.

And another important thing is to do the exercises they recommend in betwen treatments as it makes all the difference with recovery times. Years ago I didn't use to bother and so carried injuries about a lot longer.

Thats the problem I think is that some people (GPs in particular) expect you not to ride! I rang my GP in October as the pain was unbearable, they passed me on to MIU (who xrayed told me it wasnt broken (no sh** sherlock!)) and thus far I have had no joy with getting any further. Not riding is not an option, I would like to have something to help me while I am riding.
Will look for some local sports physio's then. Thanks for that.

I have used a very good sport physio and although no knowledge of riding requirements it was not a problem. As she worked to remove the stiffness and get the body working evenly. Certainly don't restrict yourself to one that understands riding but do try and find one by word of mouth as the effectiveness of the physios do vary.

Thats what I am struggling with, finding one that is recommended!! I have used one guy before, but I wasnt keen on him (bit wierd!) I think I will do a bit of local research and look for testimonials. Did you find it very beneficial? I am fine when Sov is going well and being obedient, but I am lacking the suppleness/softness needed when he starts to be a git! Its a bit all or nothing, with no middle ground!

I found physios useless as they just treated the symptoms (lower back muscles in spasm) rather than investigate and treat the root cause (right hip plate displaced due to 2 "over the top" falls in quick succession). It took a chiropractor who x-rayed and investigated properly.

Mine was great and used a lot of alternative therapies as well to fix the minor problems such as oil massage and accupuncture. Mine helped a lot although I was recovering from injury rather than a more general stiffness. I have to admit I did take some riding pictures into my physio.

I use a combination of Andy Thomas - www.eventphysio.com who's been doing the masterclass thing in H&H and an osteopath. Andys great as has so much knowledge and understands how things affect your riding. He also did an assessment of me on a horse and videoed it to point out things where I had weakmesses, problems and potential problems. Was v interesting.

Osteopath can clunk me back into place too and has longer effects.

I have seen lots of physios through playing rugby and now see a chiropracter for riding.
I do not think it matters what sport you are playing as you still need good balance and strength and any physio will be able to help with this. All the chiros I have seen seem to also have a very good understanding of riding.
If looking for a good physio locally ring your local rugby club as they should be able to recommend someone.

Yes ditto - my main physio contacts are through rugby!! You could try your local club or any professional clubs you have near you as they will probably use someone of a high standard.

I am a Physio, chatered etc, etc, but now doing a masters in vet physio so i can do the horses too. i'm very keen to look at both horse and rider together as lots of problems in the rider are reflected in the horse and vice versa!!
I am building up by private client base at the mo but you are a bit far away!!! i wouldn't bother with NHS physio as you would have to wait an age as waiting lists are usually huge, there are many physio's out there that i'm sure would be able to help you!!
