Has anyone on here tried a sports psychologist?? I've got quite a difficult mare & various dramas have occured during our time together which sometimes make me nervous, I've had a couple of nasty falls off her, the last one in April resulting in broken ankle, operation etc etc. In the time immediately before the ankle we had so got it together, I was riding her the best ever thanks to some brilliant sj training, & my confidence was as its never been before. She's starting to get a bit naughty again, partly because I am a little nervous (again!!), & she can obviously tell my leg is still weak, I can't stand it if she starts running off with me again & being horrible in the ring. I know that I have the ability to ride her, but my head gets in the way & I so want to be back where we were before the ankle, sorry its long, but do you think one of these guys would help?? Ended up crying in last weeks sj lesson, then jumping it foot perfect!!! Arggghh!!!

Confidence crisis is a horrible thing. My mare had gone great for the first 6 months then out of no where in a SJ lesson she started vetical rearing for several mins (I have no idea how we stayed on, or upright TBH), it really did knock me. I had to start visualising me doing well on her etc and that it was the first episode in 6 months. I also changed instructors, I have to say my instructors have been great and know exactly how I should ride the quirky mare. They think I ride so much more confidently now and I am no longer scared of her. Good luck it takes time and patience

A very good friend of mine is a sports psychologist and I've been dragging her to all sorts of things with me! She's really helped me as I suffer from my nerves, she's so calm and positive that you feel you can do anything!! If its getting you down then look into it, I'm probably one of the most cynical people around but this is something that has really helped me! Where are you based, PM if you want, if your near by I could put you in touch with my friend?

Sports psychologist could help but what worked for me was Thought Field Therapy (TFT), dont ask me how it works, but it does. For more information have a look at www.jocooper.com drop Jo an email, she is very approachable and helpful. Will probably be cheaper than a sports psychologist and she offers a money back guarantee.

Sport psychology is not necessarily expensive.

It can work on rider confidence, building trust in the horse/rider partnership and pre performance routines (especially good for dressage). It is worth the time and is becoming widely used within equestrianism.

Let's be honest Tiger Woods has one walking round the golf course with him and his clubs don't have a personality!!!
