Sporty Cars & Horse Ownership - How is it done?

another MX5 owner here...

I bought it just a few months before the Spooky Pony suddenly arrived...had no idea I'd be getting a horse. I love my little car, but it's sadly impractical, and I really want a 3.5 ton lorry...so I'm thinking of selling it and getting a lorry and a cheap runabout instead...

It is indeed a Type R

OH bought it as a shell and has done most of the work himself - currently building the engine from scratch and its gonna be a monster forged 2.5L engine and should kick out about 600bhp

(The last one we had was about 450bhp and it is certainly good fun

Have to say I am quite partial to a nice scooby - personally I prefer the classics - my RB5 was loverly! How about swapping yours for a P1 if you fancy something different?

I also prefer the classics, but they are starting to get old, and its so hard to find one that isn't ragged to ruins!!
The one I had first, was registered as a WRX but when it was doing 295bhp on the rolling road, it turned out to be an STi which was a resukt. I spent money on that, putting a front mounted intercooler on it etc etc and think when I sold it, it was doing about 320bhp. I only sold it as was given the chance of buying the Type R, cheap (unregistered) and did, got it registered and love it dearly!! RB5's are awesome, and yes P1's are cool, but VERY rare to find one with low mileage now! Think the best Scooby of all it the HawkEye 320... I would love one of those, but still out of my budget!!

I am trying to convince OH to go 50/50 on a new sporty number, as he is selling his Audi estate for a small van for work (he is always driving from site to site, and the Audi is VERY juicy!!)

well everyone has different views on cars and horses

maybe one way to have both is to go down the classic car front, insure through the what ever car club it is my morris (i know not sporty) only cost me £50 a year fully comp and agreed value and also no road tax which meant as a student i could still run my own horse by myself.

to me a car gets you from a to b and doesn't brake down in the middle

so how about an old mini cooper or spitefire, then you could have the thrills and also the horse

I had an bright red MGF registration AHP = 'A Happy Person' Then along came Mickey and we part x'd the MGF for a Shogun to tow the trailer... then Mickey wouldn't go in the trailer for about a year!! Oh the joy of horses! My poor MGF.

Aww Mickey, shame about the MG. I also have one, in British Racing Green. I've had it for 5 years and love it to bits, it should be retired soon (I want to keep her as a classic) as she has 92k miles on her.

I bought the MG whilst I had horses, and for a few years it was my only car. It handled going down an unsealed byway and driving across the field well. I could also fit 2 x saddles, 2 x bridles, hats (1 went under the bonnet), grooming items etc. You just need to know how to pack it. I now have our beloved family Micra as my stable car, so the MG doesn't have to contend with fields in her old age.

It is indeed a 200, love my car. always wanted one since that shape first came out. abit sad but my i dragged my oh half (who was always into his old fords and VWs) over to my side and he has an older shape that very quick.

just wish i could keep it cleaner but everytime i clean its dirty in 5 mins.
mad.gif

Havnt done to much but the plan is to lower it and then chip it im hoping to get 280bhp from it. Dont want to do any more as i wont be able to afford to run it.

Lippyx, can you please, please reduce the size of your signature, with all the text as well as the photos it's about 3 times the height it should be. Thank you

I personally have no desire to have a sports car, so problems solved for me.
grin.gif
Although my friend, who helped me inspect and negotiate for the last car and horse I bought, always mocks me that I spent 5 times as much on the horse
blush.gif
I wouldn't have it any other way

Ermmm don't have a little sporty car but have a reasonably nice car - Audi A3

which took a lot of saving for me to buy outright (2nd hand not new!) and i live at home with my mother still otherwise i wouldn't be able to keep car running and still have money spare for feed, horse insurance etc....

I used to have a lovely little MX5...first time I tried to get a haybale in the boot made me realise that horses and lttle cars don't mix!

[/ QUOTE ]

Light weight! I can get 3 bags of feed and 3 little bales of haylage in my MX5!

Ah this is making me pine for my MX5.....

I sold it and bought something more practical, not for horses but for work, my mega commute was killing it and my pocket! (It wasn't that thirsty really but I do over 500 miles a week)

I've compromised now and have a 1.5dci six speed clio with sports kit, so plenty sporty enough for beating chavs at lights, economical enough for all those motorway miles and a nice big boot........ just need the horse now!

Anyway DH needs something bigger for his business so hopefully when we buy a horse that can be the stables car. Only problem is that I need to convince him that he can find another car to match the off roading abilities of his 14 year old polo!!!

Bless it negotiated Burghley last year in all the mud, without needing a tow. In fact it has only been towed off a showground once in all our tradestand expeditions, and we often overtake stuck 4x4s!!!
smile.gif
Only trouble is he can't fit the whole trade stand in it now and I'm blowed if I'm going to risk the front splitter on mine going through fields to help him!
