Hiya,

My horses are scratching and i suspect they have fleas/lice/mites. I have powder but it apwars to not work so i have now bought Pig Oil and Sulpher and a stronger powder that comes recommended. Bought on ebay so awaiting arrival.

Was also told to use x-Large dog (40-60kg) Spot on and give it to the horse. So do i put it on their withers or legs or what do i do?

I also have a Clydesdale with super thick feathers so i guess i will have to use it on his feathers at least.

Any advice on how to use it would be great

Thanks in advance!

Its shedding time. ALL horses are itchy at this time of the year. I would not put anything on esp a spot on. They are terrible for dogs so deff not for horses.

I agree, spot on will target dog fleas and lice, horses do not routinely get fleas and I don't think they get the same lice as horses, using random chemicals to treat an undiagnosed problem will do no good, at best be a waste of money, at worst it may be harmful.
You need to find out what the issue is and use the appropriate treatment, it could just be the coat changing making them itch or it could be lice or mites which require a course of treatment to get rid of, the Clydesdale may be best being examined by your vet as having full feathers getting them treated if it has really taken hold will not be easy without clipping the whole lot off.

I use Spot on for my dog and it works a treat. I know its not for horses but was told from many ppl it works.

Ofcourse im not going to use it without confirming. Im only asking HOW to use it if i need to from someone whos used it before if anyone on here has.

Im going to use powder and pig oil to be safe in the meantime. Vets out at the start of next week.

Thanks for your reply

There is a huge difference between seasonal shedding and the hair loss caused by lice, so if you think the hair loss is excessive, it probably is lice.

I wouldn't advise using dog Spot on, the dose is far too low for a horse. Farm stores will sell you Spot on for cattle and sheep, which my (farm) vet says is safe and effective to use on horses. We have had a lice infestation this winter, picked up from local untreated horses, in the very mild weather. Spot on cleared it up with no trouble. Cooper's Fly Repellent Plus works too.

Yeah ive had horses for years and the itching looks very aggressive and not the usual normal scratch.

I never knew they made it for cattle and sheep. I will get it from my tackstore to be safe and have it on stand by.

The biggest problem is that one of my horses is untouched. Had her a year now and its took me this long to get her to walk close to me but not being caught. I wish they allowed us to have dart guns lol. But patients and food works too :)

I have 14 in total. In seperate fields.

Thanks

Just as an aside coopers spot on is not at all like dog spot on so don't be tempted to use it on your dog. Whoever suggested dog spot on was clearly confusing the two which could be dangerous the other way round.

Coopers will sort the horses out. Put it on where you don't have to touch them however. I would put it on the rump, in one spot. It will leave a greasy area for a while.

I was told from 4 differant ppl to use dog spot on. So they must of been told to use it and so on so it wasnt just one person who mentioned it.

Ive bought the Coopers Spot on and will use tht once the vets popped out to see my lot.

Just one dose on every horse on their bum or due to my Clydesdale do i need to put it elsehere.

Thanks
