Not sure if people saw my thread saying about what the vet said but its here:
http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=592545

Have been slowly upping his fitness again and he is losing weight really well now :D Still need him to lose a bit more but want to go for some longer hacks to do this which is hard when the weather is so bad :( Have got rid of the spurs as decided they made not much difference to him and he actually seems to get more stuffy in them. Was in a normal cavesson but he seemed to be getting really strong in the canter so swapped back to the drop and he seems lots better.

So after having 3 days off due to snow and being in 24/7, We jumped in the deep end a bit with our first ever Novice BD (and only 3rd time at novice).

It was absolutely freezing bitter strong wind but warmup and test was indoors. Warmed up very forward and a bit sharp (not surprising really) we did lots of short periods of trot and then did stretchy walk lots in between.

Decided he really doesn't like the thin HKM comp saddle cloth as he has been schooling in thick anky/ eskadron all winter so need a new saddle pad. Suggestions??

New approach to the test is to canter around the ring before the bell rings. This seemed to work as he was lovely and forward and for the first time ever didn't drop me down the centre line! Hurrah!!

First mistake is that we did the trot- walk- trot to change rein but as we went back up to trot he spotted his handsome self in the mirror and did a very fetching llama impression.

Medium trot actually resembled a medium trot for once! Have changed my approach to half half as we start on the diagnol and then ask for about 4 strides of medium and then bring him back as he isn't strong enough to do any more.

Canter went well until we did the 20m circle in the middle and at the point I was meant to ask for medium he spotted himself in the mirror again which meant he dropped back to trot and did his llama impression again :miffed: he then tripped on the way back up to canter.

Walk was hideous because he wasn't concentrating and was anticipating the transition back up to trot so played it safe. Its a shame as walk is his best pace.

Second medium I asked for too much so lost the rhythm and was a bit hurried.

Overall was pleased that his transitions had improved looooaaads over winter and he was bending around corners so much better! His canter is a billion times stronger and so so lovely now! But at the same time wasn't expecting a massive score due to all his mistakes and have lots to work on!

Went back later to find that I had got 65.38%!!! Which means first 3 shiny BD points AND first points towards the regionals! So so ecstatic!!! I thought I might be aiming a bit high for the novice restricted regionals this year but this score is really encouraging. :)

Rowan's favourite part of the test- stretchy trot (I think he would love to do western lol)

Now have 2 novice tests at Arena UK next wednesday! Fingers crossed the weather stays ok.

He looks lovely and a nice med trot! :) how tall is he? Well done on points too, I'm hoping to join soon and maybe even get a couple of points - wishful thinking.

He is only 15hh. You should def join :) I didn't think me and Row had any chance of doing well and felt really out of place in the warmup with huge warmbloods bouncing around but judge obviously thought we were ok :)

You're both really coming on :)

Thanks :)

Ooo I thought he was actually smaller than 15hh, more 14hh - sorry! Either way he is a lovely boy :) I do think some judges enjoy seeing something different in the arena and obviously being spotty he is quite different haha! I'm hoping they will think the same with my boy being 'just a pony' n all that!

Looks lovely in the pics - well done!

Thankyou :)

lol no worries, somedays he looks huge and some days he looks titchy. I think it depends if he is going through a lanky stage or a chunkying out stage in his growing. Dancer is only 15hh as well. I love the titchy horses, far more fun ;)

I am no expert, but I just wanted to say your position is really good in these photos. You have improved loads :) What's your secret?!

Thanks that means a lot!
My secret? Get loads of people on forums telling you how awful your position is ;)
Seriously, I have pics and or videos take of me quite often and I am my best critic. I cringe looking at how awful my position is in past photos! I also have had a few lessons at work and my boss yells at me whenever I don't look where I am going.
Still far from perfect! My right foot does strange things and I still lean forward too much in canter and my hands appear to be doing strange things!
I also have an amazing instructer ;)

Well done on such a good score! :D He def looks more uphill - particularly the canter pics. Also, in quite a few of the pics your position looks much better, hard work paying off! :D Its something I struggle with too. Med trot looks to be coming on nicely.

Looking much better, both you and him!

How does a horse tell you he doesn't like the saddlepad?

Lol bantry he is more likely to buck in the thin pad :p he hasn't been bucking at all at home over the past couple of months but in this pad he was bucking in canter again. Granted, when I put saddle on completely straight he stopped but I think the think having a thin pad doesn't help.

Thanks! It definitely is paying off :) Medium trot is slowly getting there but he is never gonna trot like valegro. His canter makes up for it though :D

Wow he looks fantastic! Really soft and gorgeous :)

Thankyou :) He feels so much softer and supple this year :) Judge comments said he needs a bit more suppleness though so more stuff to work on!

Wow what a clever chap!!!!! You must be thrilled :)

Defnitely thrilled! Was thinking we would only just scrape in the 60s after last year :D

Wow well done, looks a MASSIVE improvement! Congrats!!

He has a heart on his bum, never noticed that before!

Heehee thanks! Yes he does! He has one on the other side of his bum as well but more near the back.

Congrats! Looks like he's really come on from the pics. Looks fab!

Thanks :) Slowly, slowly getting there. He seems to be learning so much slower than other horses but hopefully the hard work will be worth it in the end!

Great pics, fab score too!!! Well done :)

Thankyou :)

awww thank you

really really proud of how you have both upped your game over last few weeks, everything is so much more consistant and he really knows you mean business now lol! cheeky little spotty monkey!

re pads, my joshua jones and my kentucky pad are both thicker than HKM-fondle them next week if you want?

Haha he still has moments where he is like "ooh I will see if I can get away with not doing that" but I am much quicker on it now. Think he even appreciates a bit more clearer aids and really letting him know what he can get away with and what he can't.
Still thought he could get away with stopping in the middle of the canter and peering in the mirror, although I don't think he will try that again :P

Ohh that would be fab thanks! I want something a bit different to the plain white ones but all of the pads seem to look the same. Was pondering on eskadron platinum but sold out everywhere and don't think the new ones will be out for a while :(

Thanks :) I already use a sheepskin half pad over the hkm and he still prefers thicker more cushiony pads. Have also tried putting sheepskin straight on his back rather than between pad and saddle and still not keen on this. He is like the princess and the pea!

Decided I'm gonna try and postpone the arena uk comp due to all this ehv stuff :(

Awww that's so lovely to see! You give me hope that my boy and I might go bd affiliated one day..... :) how old is your boy and when did you decide you were ready for novice? I'm too chicken to move up!

He's looking much stronger and through now :) Has he grown in front now too or is it just all your hard work creating the uphill look?!

Re: the pads, could you not get a white anky pad if that's what he's happy with? Sticking with what you know and all that ;) (I feel your pain btw, polypads seem to be the only thing thick enough for HRH Wilby... May get shunned by the other dressage people!)

He's looking lovely, great photos. Out of interest how have you developed the medium trot? Our welshx pony is doing well, but daughter really struggles with the medium paces. Just how he is made really, but always interested if there is a new exercise to try;)

He is 6years old this year :) We were getting pretty good scores at prelim so decided to have a go at some novices. We did one last year unaffiliated but just got 61.7% as he wasn't totally ready as his medium trots just involved rushing on the forehand and he wasn't very responsive to my leg. He feels a lot more grown up this year :)

He is a stunner, I love him!

Heehee he is a pretty boy :D

Yeh he suddenly has withers now :O Still hasn't quite caught up with his bum but I think his bum has finally stopped growing so just his front end needs to catch up.

He likes the ANKY pads but the bottom slides back on them and creates like "wings" behind the flap of the saddle. Its really werid! so now am selling the HKM pads and some of my Anky ones to replace with eskadron and eskadron cheap copies ;)

First I have to get him really straight as he likes to carry his bum to the left. Then I do loads and loads and loads of forward and back on a circle so push him forward for 3 strides and then collect him for 2 and expect him to go boom into collected trot and then boom into medium so he responds quickly. I then slowly reduce how many strides he is in collected so in the end I just half halt him to rebalance him. Gets him responding to my aids really nicely as well :) have just started doing the same in canter as well to start to develop his medium canter.

WoW!

Massive improvement on the last pics you posted :)

Well done!

Thanks :)
