Just curious really. I have a bay blanket spot. I think he is appaloosa x cob. I have had him 3 years and his blanket has got a bit bigger but he is still very bay but with some white hairs mixed in the bay. I was just wondering if it was likely he will eventually go completely white. He is 9 this year. Thanks very much x

Very unlikely.

Greys tend to fade to white over time but Appaloosas should not carry the grey gene. Of course some crosses do have grey in their lines but on the whole as Appaloosas get older, their background colour tends to fade and make the spots more prominent.

Mine when almost completely grey on his bay/roany bits in old age (bit like my hair!) but his spots remained dark.

Wish ours had taken some years to fade!

Yes as per above, it is likely he will roan out, basically getting whiter every year but will keep spots and be left with them and varnish marks. You may get more spots appearing as they are left behind and were perhaps not visible before. The length of time taken to roan out can vary greatly. Lovely all the same :-)

Thank you very much for the replies. So even if his coat does fade he should keep his spots as they are solid brown and not roan at all. Looks like he will fade very slowly as he is only slightly more white on him then the first pic of aspm horse and he is 9 this year. I don't really mind what colour he ends up cos I didn't buy him cos of his colour. He has such a sweet personality the interesting colour is just an added bonus. I just find it really interesting how it could change ☺

Ours took 20 years of changing to get to a near leopard, changing slightly every year.

Enjoy yours... I love a spotty! Yours will prob have some other features, white sclera around eye, mottled or particoloured skin on muzzle and or genital areas, striped hoof or hooves, poss a fine mane and or tail.

You may notice the spots have different lengths of fur if you leave unclipped. Ours is like brail when au natural dep on the colour of spot.. Really weird lol!

Yes he does have the white sclera round his eyes, mottled skin on his muzzle and the farrier always says he has the stripiest hooves of any horse he does lol. The white hair on his blanket is thicker than the rest of his hair and u can feel his spots too. I will post a pic if I can work out how to do it ☺
