Spotty people - winter colouring?

Was having a look at my boy this morning while he was getting farriered... It looks like some of his spots are joining up and turning into short stripes

So weird! I haven't noticed it before, so I wonder if this is just something that happens when his winter woolies come through. He is 10 years, black / white varnish roan colouring.

Maybe he has zebra in his lines somewhere??
