Spraining ankle in stirrup

Ouch, poor you. I wondered if mine would have been less severe had I been wearing long boots rather than short boots & chaps. Mine was when horse jibbed & swerved. What boots were you wearing?

After a lot of research we swapped to Sprengers for my daughter who was experiencing ankle pain. They are expensive - but certainly do the job and have improved her lower leg position as well. Any articulated stirrup will help - it just depends on how much you want to spend and apparently how long you want them to last - although having only switched about 3 years ago I haven't seen a set of sprengers wear out. I have seen other makes break in competition - but that could just be chance.

HOW much?!! They'd better also muck out and make the tea for that, although I do hear reports of this type of stirrup really helping with various joint pain problems.

I went one better, broke my fib right on the ankle when my then ish bounced and i eventually landed a bit hard on the stirrup. Felt and heard the snap but still had to ride 20 mins back to the yard :(
Not my finest hack.....

And me, broken ankle without falling off the horse. I wish I had come off.

Jumped a ditch on a pleasure ride, 18h young horse launched like a rocket ship, I went so high I needed oxygen, horse stayed straight and I eventually landed back in the saddle and something in my ankle went ping.

Insult to injury came in hospital when they cut my best boots down the front instead of the seam, despite my begging them to do the seam.

I use the cheap version of sprenger irons, I think they were £40ish and so far I am impressed with them, certainly help with ankle and knee pain.

I was a bit unconvinced about the inside of my fake sprengers (these are amidale 4 way) so ended up with the real thing!

I've got a weak ankle, after going over on it badly last year. I've got bendy stirrups, and I use an angled tread on the weak side, which prevents my ankle rolling outwards and re-spraining itself, which has happened a few times!

That's interesting Auslander. I have weak ankles which really is a pain. I've got bendy stirrups which help with joint pain a lot, but the idea of building up the treads hadn't occurred to me. I also go over on my ankle which is the problem, nothing dramatic, but 8 weeks off mid season is unwelcome.
Mind you I did wonder if Michael Jung sprained his ankle at Burghley& it didn't stop him yesterday - I need some of what he's on!

Siennamum, i use royal rider flexi stirrups and was using them that day i bust my leg.
i still find now, over 2.5 yrs later that the best support for the ankle is close fit gaiters over well fitting jodh boots.
It doesn't help that i have severe arthritis in the right ankle from since it was encased for the 6 weekd. This summer i succumbed to having injections into both ankles (horse equivalent of having hocks injected) and things have been a lot more comfortable since and i can now even trota fuzzy up for a vet without hopping, howling and generally being in pain :)

They work really well. I'm inclined to let my ankles roll inwards, and the angled tread stops me doing it. I've really noticed the difference, particularly when dismounting - getting off a 17hh horse onto ankles that have been collapsed inwards for an hour is really painful!

I was constantly rolling ankles and no physical therapy helped did it once in the saddle when I kicked horse on in a lap of honor and he kicked up his heels.

In keeping with copying my horse management I've made a conscious effort to go BF and then got BF shoes - my flat feet have improved and I've not rolled my ankle once since transitioning - I play netball and soccor (altho not ideal for accurate kicks but I made do for defence) in them as well - I don't actually ride in them tho :)
