Hello there, I am posting on behalf of a friend who has tried everything to control her Yorkshire Terriers habit of attacking other dogs in the park luckily he is small and does no damage.

She has tried Clicker training with a behaviorist and this hasn't worked. They believe it is a protection instinct for her small son but its really spoiling her enjoyment of him.

She has heard of these collars which spray the dog as a deterrent, via a remote control, when he gets aggressive but they are quite expensive and we were wondering if anyone has any views.

No experience I am afraid but they seem to work very well (and quickly) on Dog Borstal on the telly

The Aboistop which is a spray collar is the only one the RSPCA can recommend, as I contacted them a while ago when we first got my dog and he had a barking issue.

However bad news from your friends perspective, as she won't be able to use one of these on a Yorkshire Terrier, they are too small. I think the minimum weight dog that can wear one is around 8kg (from memory). There isn't a suitable product for Yorkies. The only thing I can suggest is a plant sprayer with plain water or just a small drop of citronella added. I have seen a Yorkie owner who uses this method for training.

Good suggestion and have just asked and she hasn't. Wouldn't want to though as she doesn't want him thinking its her doing something to him, whereas the remote on these collars can be hidden in your pockets.

Can I suggest a different approach that you might suggest to your friend, as attacking other dogs isn't acceptable even if her dog is small (and it could land the dog into serious trouble if it provokes an aggressive larger dog).

I walk my Yorkie at the park on a 50ft training lead. It allows him a good run but I remain in control. It's really to stop him running off, as Terriers do like to chase squirrels, birds and anything that moves, and can disappear down large holes or in thickets. If your friend got one of these, which you can get on eBay, then she could keep her dog away from other dogs without curtailing his freedom to run. This may be the only realistic way of resolving the problem.

Also bear in mind that my dog thought the spray collar was a good wheeze, he just held his nose until the nasty stuff ran out then put up 2 fingers and diappeared over the horizon again......

Plastic bottle filled with pebbles can be effective if shaken suddenly when dog does something undesirable, then reward straight away to keep their attention.
