Would anybody have a use for one of these, 20" in size? Madam has outgrown hers (perfect fit on the neck, just a squeeze to get it back over her head now!) and it seems a shame to let it languish in a drawer as it looks brand new.

It's as shown here. I refuse to sell anything on ebay these days so if anyone wants it, pipe up, don't want any money for it. :)

I did think of you and CC but if I can only just squeeze it over Dax's head without her eyes bulging out I don't think you'd even get it over the snout of any of yours! :D

I am a real convert and have ordered a bigger one to use, lovely bit of kit.

MB, it's just like a standard choke/check collar only it doesn't catch on the fur of coated breeds. I also prefer the action, a thin chain tends to zip up and down and can go infinitely tight whereas these don't tighten so quickly or so tightly.

She wears a flat nylon collar at all times and then for walks I slip this on, higher on the neck, with a plain lead. Strictly speaking I can walk her on a flat collar these days, or even in her harness, as she no longer pulls; it just gives that extra degree of control should we find ourselves in various situations. :)

ETA: Collar has now been bagsied via PM. :p

Evil things, am a behaviourist and dont condone any use of choke chains/check collars... seen far too many injured dogs from them. Get a harness.

You tried walking a dog that's trained to pull competitively in harness, in a harness? I can mine, if I really need to, but good luck being towed around by the other 90% of sibes to whom a harness means work...

They are only evil and injuring when used incorrectly, just like any other tool.

Well as hopefully the new owner of a nice shiny new Sprenger large link choke chain :D thanks BC :D and having been brought up with GSDs my whole life, owned them, trained them, handled them in the ring, most of the dogs I have known and all my own dogs have worn them and I have never seen any injuries whatsoever caused by large link choke chains,.

They're not evil, they're an inanimate piece of metal, I'm not evil, I've been taught how to use them correctly from a young age, the dogs in my sig are wearing them and they look happy enough to me.

Mine have half check collars. Does that mean I'm half evil and half angelic?!! :D
As others have already said, it isn't the collars that are evil it is the way they are used.

Hmm, do you think that in the future they would be any use to the 'naughty sibe' puppy I have who is growing up v fast? She is 14wks now, and you can really feel how strong she will be!!

Puppy classes are teaching 'heel' at the moment, and she is brilliant 90% of the time, but the 10% she is busy focussing on something else instead of me like trying to distract another puppy :)

MB, to be honest mine are on the dead link most of the time.

She's young enough now that you can throw all your time and effort into focus training with her, when you're watching telly, when you're at a loose end, focus, focus, focus. Work with her for short bursts every day, not just at training and do your distractions at home, in the park.
Training class is one day a week. Real training, the real work, happens every day.

Hand feed her from your pocket instead of a bowl, keep a toy or ball in the pocket to encourage her to look up at you.

The idea of the collar, or any tool, isn't to overpower the dog's strength or to fight against them constantly, it's a quick check and a reminder to look up, stay close, it's nicer for the dog that way, they will get praise or a treat. It's a reinforcement of behaviour that should be there already or a way to help help the dog to display that behaviour.

A lot of dogs will force themselves against any resistance they feel on their neck or chest. A lot of dogs just want to get to where they're going really fast right NOW and versus four legs, you're just not taking them there fast enough. A lot of dogs are understimulated.
There are a lot of reasons why dogs pull - find out why first, or even better, work on it now and don't wait for it to happen, before you look at any training method or tool.

Ought to be with you tomorrow - have included a pressie for the asbo twins. :p

MB, ditto everything CC says and really resist the temptation to use a harness until she's a bit older and can understand the distinction between collar = heel and harness = PULL! I really cannot emphasise how important the focus is, as a breed they are renowned for their independence and you desperately need to claw back every bit of focus you can get. They're not like a lab who will constantly look to you for guidance, you need to remind them all the time. It's been a real learning curve for me, having had human-pleasing dogs up until now, and I warn you now that sometimes you just want to shake them and go "bloody well LOOK AT ME!". :o

As an aside, how exactly does one check a 25kg+ dog on a harness? I've already got a dodgy back and no desire to throw it back out. :p

Aw, thanks BC :D you shouldn't have :o

Interestingly, for our trials, the only Schutzhund legal collar for the obedience and arm-munching...er, protection phases...is..a large link choke chain in the 'dead' position - in fact most people track with just the collar and either thread the line through a loop fastened around the mid section or through the middle of the dog's leg.

All those evil dog abusers!

I tried B in a harness and he put my back out...

BC & CC thanks for the advice, we have been doing such alot of training each day that she is quite ahead in the classes. You can really tell the difference between her and the others because we have already started 'heel' ages ago on the lead.
We do occasionally have the 'bloody look at me now' moments, but generally I am very pleased with her.
Will not be harnessing till she is at least 1 and capable of all the commands I'm training her now. LOL at you checking a sibe on a harness, I've already been thrown forward by a mini sibe on a lead!! :)
