I am going to buy a pair of sprenger stirrups - what is the difference (if any) between the bow balance, the 4 way system and the offset 4 way system in terms of riding? And would people recommend the cheese grater treads over the the plain rubber treads?

Have heard that the thorowgood T6 ones just do not compare - is this true?

I have never really been bothered about stirrups - just have bog standard Kieffer ones with plain rubber treads but as I have a dodgy hip the sprenger ones have been suggested so thought I might try a pair.

Thanks for any advice!

I think mine are the 4 way system. I had probs with knees and hips and they are good. I used to dread getting off after a hack! I got mine off ebay for £30 (secondhand) as I wasnt willing to pay full price for something that didnt work! But it was money well spent. I dont like schooling in them as I find them a bit wobbly but that is probably my rubbish riding LOL!

Thanks dozzie.

I think I might try the bow balance ones as they have a wider tread, but otherwise from what I can see they look to work in the same way as the offset 4 way system ones.

I've had both system 4 and bow balance at the same time (on 2 saddles for my 2 horses) so used both regularly. I couldn't tell any difference between them except if you lose a stirrup, the angled ones seen slightly easier to recover. They are both a huge improvement on the basic fixed stirrup for any aches and pains from ankle to hip!

I've got the thorowgoods, and honestly can't tell the difference between those and the 4 way ones. However, if I had the money I would get the bow balance ones, you really can feel the difference and they are lovely ;)
