Hello,

A bit of a strange question for you medical types out there. I am hypermobile and recovering from a sacroiliac joint injury (stretched it too far 😣) and wondered if - when I'm fit to ride again - I should avoid using my flexi sprenger system 4 stirrups and opt for the traditional type? Just wondering if the sprenger stirrups might actually be worse for my hyper mobility... Any thoughts would be gratefully received as I really don't want to get injured again and looking into every aspect (too much time on my hands!!) xxx

Hiya. I have hypermobility myself so can understand the struggles. I returned to riding from an injury a couple of weeks ago, I don't used flexis as I thought they wouldn't help, but I now find I have ankle pains therefore I tried some flexis and found it to be much better. Hope that helps x

I have hypermobility and find that Flexi stirrups really help to stop me overflexing my ankles as they're harder to force against.

I find that, without them, I tend to lock my ankle joints in a vain attempt to stabilise them which, in turn, causes locked knees and hips.

I just have a cheap set at the moment but definitely want to get some Sprengers as I've found them so helpful.

Thank you both so much! Glad it's not just me out there struggling with being so blooming stretchy and bendy! - although I wouldn't wish it on anyone!! 😬 Thanks for your input I think I'm just going to keep my sprengers; as I also struggled with my ankles which improved slightly with the Sprengers so I guess it must help all the way up...I've bought a ankle support for when I'm back in action to stop my ankle going over too. Hopefully that will help. I blame my parents with their crappy bendy genes!!

Ha ha! It really can be a pain, can't it? Just the other week, I had a breakthrough when, after telling me to slide my shoulder blades down my back, my instructor commented that I hadn't moved anything. When she came over to correct me, she found that my shoulder blades had in fact moved but, as they're so bendy, nothing else had moved with them!

I'm constantly having to find different solutions so that I don't tense my muscles to stabilise my joints. You're right: it is reassuring to know that there are others out there struggling with the same issues.

I hope your injury heals well and you get back to riding soon!

I'm hypermobile, too. I can't ride in traditional fillis irons, they have to be flexi. I use a set of saddlery own-brand, they are decent enough so that my ankles/knees/hips don't hurt.

When having my saddles fitted, I used the irons and leathers the saddler provided, I really noticed the difference after only a few minutes. Was so glad to have my flexis back!

Angled irons are ok, like Freejumps. They are comfortable enough for a jump-round or schooling session, but nothing is as comfy IMO.
