sprengers v's cheaper flexi stirrups? a question

have the mountain horse safety stirrups but im not sure about them, and since hurting my ankle am thinking about the flexi ones...


i see frogpool manor have some for about £20, whereas the sprengers are 4-5 times this!

However!!! the sprengers flex in 4 ways, making them good for releasing your foot in an emergency. My question is, do the cheaper versions also flex the same as the sprengers, or just forwards/backwards?
 
i spoke to frogpool and their own brand only flex 2 ways, forward and back... so im wondering now are there infact ANY that are as safe as the sprengers (am looking at safety for now, not comfort)? what about the thorowgood t6's ?
 
I tried to get the T6's but was told by my local saddler that they were not being produced anymore. I have ridden in all sorts of flexi stirrups and would always choose the Sprenger. Not sure from a safety point of view but they feel much more secure and shock-absorbing than cheaper versions. The cheaper ones squeak too!
 
I have some unbranded ones and also thorowgood ones and they are both much nicer than conventional irons, though the thorowgood have grey inserts which isn't as nice looking.

I would say that if you can afford them you might as well get the Sprenger, but if money is an issue then the cheaper ones will still do an excellent job!
 
I much prefer my Sprengers to any other copy. Mine were a 16th birthday present, I'm 23 this summer, and they still look like new. I ride everyday, and jump, hunt, XC, hack etc etc in mine.
 
I am on my second pair of cheapies, they seem fine, I slid back the rubber and greased the joints to prolong life and stop rusting, they dont sqweek.
 
Bought myself a pair of cheaper ones from Townfields saddlery at Badminton. I'd resisted buying a cheaper pair online as I was a bit worried about being able to check the quality! I'd love a pair of Sprenger but unfortunately I just can't justify paying that sort of money when I already had a perfectly serviceable set of conventional irons!

These were about £25, seem very solid and sturdy. They only really flex in forward/backward direction but I wonder if sideways flexibility would feel wierd? I'm impressed with them anyway, did a 10 mile fun ride today and for the first time no knee pain!

No squeaking so far! But as Pedantic did, I'm sure a bit of grease or WD40 would soon sort that out anyway.
 
Hi I had a pair of cheap ones that I used for quite a while but in the end they snapped whilst I was ridden a very bouncy warmblood that I had only sat on a couple of times (I had just backed her). Not a good senario! I now have the sprenger ones and I can tell a big difference in the quality and the way they move with your foot in. If you go for cheaper ones please becareful....could be an accident waiting to happen......I was only riding on the flat!!
