Spring clean up needed...horse!

I have a Welsh D that I have always allowed to be 'au natrel' other than trimming the length off his tail so it does not drag on the ground.
I have had him many a year and his mane is now about 2 foot long and looks a bit of a mess to be honest. I have decided that the time has come for a good old spring clean and tidy up but I am not sure what to do with it!
I think it could do with being trimmed to a normal mane length - do not want to hog it - and we do not do any showing.
Can anyone advise how to do this and what equipment to use please?
I was thinking scissors to get the length off and then perhaps pulling to give a more natural effect...or something else...
His mane is not excessively thick.
All ideas gratefully received!
 
Using sharp scissors (taking care of course) cut the mane by cutting upwards and into the mane towards the crest snip snip snip all along the length of the mane and repeat until the mane is approximately the length you require. The ends of the mane will not have a hard cut edge and then you can neaten by pulling or using a solo comb or thinning blade to get a neat natural result.

I do this to shorten all my manes before pulling as it saves time and also just by this method alone you can get a natural result especially on a native thick-maned type. A thin mane though will need a proper finishing.
 
oooh i will watch this with interest - my hairy boy needs a bit of spit and polish before he goes to his new home next week!!
