What is the advantage of having a springer/cocker cross? I get some of the other crosses because of no hair shedding etc. but you are just getting a dog with twice the energy !

I think I've read a post on here ages ago, mentioning something about that it simply was some gamekeepers who tried doing the cross because they wanted a robust dog with traits from both breeds, they liked the result, and on that way it is.

But having a quick look around both in some of my dog breed books, and online, I found the same interesting fact which Spotherisk talks about above: By the 1880's, Springers and Cocker Spaniels were often born in the same litters.

Some years later they where separated into two different breeds by the Kennel Club, but basically, it wasn't that long ago that their origin was actually exactly the same. So if there actually was any gamekeepers who started the Sprocker "trend", maybe they either decided to try to go back to the origin, or perhaps they simply never quite stopped breeding their type of Spaniel with a bit of both Springer and Cocker.

If you look at spaniel history springers and cockers came about from a different in weight - until then they were the same breed.

Have my Cocker bible to hand (The cocker spaniel by Janet Menzies)

Until early 1900s they were the same dog until the Kennel Club brought in a minimum weight, 25lb, so anything smaller was by default a cocker.

It was hunting woodcock that apparently got them their name. Just repeating whats in the book!

I've been told that springers are calmer than cockers and work differently so perhaps the aim of the cross is to try to get thr best of both breeds??

So interesting, thank you. I didn’t know this. Every day is a school day.

I can concur with the cockers being clingy and having their paws on their owners thigh ! Mine is always looking me straight in the face from her bed in case I move and needs endless cuddles. Luckily she is not so clingy that she cant be left.

My Nanny bought herself a sprocker and he grew the head and body size of a springer with little cocker legs, he looks ridiculous and is mad as a box of frogs. He is a very sweet boy but too much for me, and for my 84yo Nanny, he's more my uncles dog now. Pictured with my OH who is used to better behaved dogs ?

Fascinating Reading! And yes! Mrs Spaniel likes to sleep with a paw resting on my leg, so she's ready to go the instant I move! Velcro dogs is a fab description!
